Day trips from Oia or stay put?

Hi all

We're off to Oia this coming Sunday just for 2 nights with a v limited budget. I can't decide whether to just soak up Oia for the 2/3 days or to try and do a spot of sightseeing further afield as well. I've had a quote for 2 different day trips from my hotel - a wine/island tour for 75 euros each or a catamaran cruise which I'd love but which seems super expensive (cant remember the price now).

Does anybody have any advice about ways to see some more of the island without costing loads of money / being a load of hassle or would you advise just enjoying Oia and leaving it at that?

Any advice or ideas v welcome.

Thanks v much

If you can bear to drag yourselves away from the stunning views, there are several other things you could do, quite cheaply. In fact, you might even save money by being out of Oia, it's not the cheapest place in the world.

There's a very good bus system, cheap, frequent and (for Greece anyway), pretty reliable. You could go down to Fira, the main town, and window shop (leave you credit cards in the hotel safe) for gaudy overpriced jewellery, visit museums (closed Mondays).

Head down to either Kamari or Perissa beach, have a meal in one of the beachside tavernas.

Visit Akrotiri and see the excavations from the volcanic eruption of 3500 years ago. It's Santorini's answer to Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Visit a winery - there are many on the island and they're pretty cheap. There's a very polular one just on the outskirts of Oia that I can't remember the name of now (if brotherleelove comes along, he'll know it).

That should fill a couple of days for you anyway.

Best advice: Just wait until you're there to see what you're in the mood to do. Oia is so beautiful and relaxing you might not want to do anything!

This time of year the island won't be crowded so using the bus system to get around will be easy. The bus hub is in Fira and there are buses from there to every corner of the island.

The winery in Oia is Sigalas, and it's behind the Taverna Santorini Mou near Finikia.

Yes, easily, but don't expect a large, elaborate tasting facility. It's simple but the wines are excellent.

Oia is beautiful but it would be a pity not to see some other great places on Santorini once you are here! You can start with a small walk to Finikia and then down to Sigalas winery for wine tasting and the beach Bexedes or Koloumbos afterwards. Or maybe the wine tasting after the beach....;))) http://www.santorini.gr/index.php?/en/finikia

Of course you have to go to Oia's port Ammoudi also for lunch, since it might be a bit chilly to sit outside for dinner right now. Walk down and book a taxi to take you up...

As mentioned, take bus and at least visit the excavations in Akrotiri. You can easily walk to see Red beach afterwards also and have lunch in any of the small Taverns by the sea, just walk dowhill after the excavations.

Sorry, forgot to mention that you have to change bus in Fira if you want to go to Akrotiri so here is the bus shedule. http://www.ktel-santorini.gr/ It takes around 25-30 min to travel from Oia to Fira, and a bit more from Akrotiri back to Fira.

Archeological sites are shut on Mondays, so that eliminates those.
