Safaris from Zanzibar

Hi

Getting married next August and looking at honeymoon destinations. We love the idea of a beach holiday combined with a safari.

How easy is it to do a 1 or 2 night safari from Zanzibar? Would it be better to do straight off the flight from uk? Could anyone recommend any tour companies who would offer this? We don't really want a package holiday where we're travelling with others all the time. We'd much rather do an organised safari then be able to enjoy the rest of our honeymoon alone in Zanzibar.

Also, what is the weather like in August?

Recommendations/thoughts would be most welcome

Coming in late here but two scenarios.

As Peter and Steve. Adventure Camps will do a package to Selous for a few days. Hop and connecting flight via DAR to Selous. Easy, inexpensive and rewarding.

Or again, hop from ZNZ direct to Saadani. You may have to charter but it is not expensive, only 15 minutes flight, and stay at "Tent with a View". No crowds, idyllic, and plenty of Wildlife.

http://www.saadani.com/ Probably what folks imagine a honeymoon destination to be like. Beats the heck out of Lytham or Rhyll.

Personally I would forget the Northern Circuit unless you are prepared to spend longer off the beach.

Mombassa is not a Safari destination although a few nights in Tsavo would be possible from there.

Be aware though that August is Peak season so prices will be at their highest and places often get booked up,well in advance. Flights also tend to be more expensive at this time of year. So you will need to make plans and bookings soon whatever you decide.

It's for Aug '14 so you have time to plan and out of the way, then time to plan wedding.

Fly into DAR, most likely will nneed an overnight. Next day fly to Selous as mentioned above and the camps noted. Spend minimum 3/nts, then flight via DAR to ZNZ. Homebound then out of DAR.

ZNZ is tropical year-round - hot/humid and though somewhat drier in Aug, still can be uncomfy for sleeping, so consider hotel/resort that provides a/c.

While Turkish Air fares are very tempting they do arrive middle of the night at about 3am and homebound is similar so you incur addtl hotel fees; look at kLM, Qatar or Emirates... the latter two with better arrival times into DAR. And believe with Qatar you might not require o/n in DAR on arrival and can make connection to Selous a few hours later, though uncertain flight schedule from UK via Doha and layover.connection time... you've got some research to do.

I would recommend selous from zanzibar as there are many flights and its closer than the northern parks. Game is also good. Some companies do drive in deals from dar es salaam if you are on a budget. Check paka adventures or Kearsley.
