OMG all these recent reviews regarding muggings....it appears that they all tourists walk into Sal Rei with the rep but then are left to walk home alone.

This was one activity that we fancied doing but surely the people who commit these crimes have sussed the fact that a group walk in on Saturday mornings and are lying in wait for them to return alone???

I accept that muggings happen everywhere in the world, inc the UK but Im seriously stressed at the thought as my partner drips in branded labels (altho were not that rich lol)...but the muggers are not to know that! How am I gonna drink my all inc beer with a slit throat? Help!! Any info on recent visitors would be appreciated.

I think the couple were just unlucky, we went to Portugal last year and a couple had said about being mugged on trip advisor, as our hotel was next to a casino. We walked alone each night and came back quite late and nothing happened. We have booked to go to Karamboa in Oct, I think we will just try to be more careful, but you shouldn't let this spoil your holiday. I hope you have a great time :)

Regardless of country , muggings will happen, only thing you can do is to be street smart, and you can minimize the risk.

- Try to walk where you have lights

- If you are leaving a place at say 3-4 in the night and have a long walk to the hotell id suggest get help from the nightclub/bar to book a taxi to drive you to the hotell.

- And maybe not go around flaunting expensive clothes jewelry thats just my tip.

- Dont drink to much thats just bad manners.

Get a taxi back from town which is only ten euro. This will save you losing your designer gear if you are worried about that.

Me and my wife did not find Cape Verde more unsafe than any other similar destination, but as Noturn pointed out, the usual caution is needed.

In the local towns there are shopkeepers who want to walk tourists to their shops down the side alleys. That is one good thing to know when you walk around, just say no thanks. They have the same stuff what you can find anywhere else.

The hotels are all inclusive, and the "free" alcohol is also one thing to pay attention to.
