4x4 or Quad Bike hire on Boa Vista?

Has anyone been to Boa Vista lately and rented a 4 Wheel Drive for the day? How much and where can we hire one from? Going to stay at the Riu Karamboa and would be nice to explore the island ourselves not in a tour group.

Also, I understand there are quad bikes available to hire too. Are these expensive and are they a viable way of exploring the island or do they set a distance limit on you? Can they carry more than one person?

Anyone been down to Santa Monica beach (SW corner of the island) in a rental 4x4? What were the tracks like? Getting stuck a possiblity?

I highly recommend the Quad Bike tour from the Scuba Cariba (surf shop in front of the Riu Karamboa).

We did the 4 hour trip down to Santa Monica beach and back across the desert sand dunes. It's pricey at 130 Euros but this is the best way to see the island - the quads go on the beaches where as the 4 wheel drives have to stop at the sand.

The trip up to Santa Maria on the quads is only 2 hours long and is nearly as expensive so you may as well opt for the better longer trip.

Its safer too to go with a guide as outside the protection of the hotel there are local people who if they see you on your own will harrass and pester you to part with your money during the day. At night we were advsied not to leave the hotel premises altogether. The reps won't tell you this though so please be warned!

You can hire 4x4s like the Suzuki Jimny or a Mitzibushi L200 but get ready to part with hundreds and hundreds of Euros if this is your thing. (Deposit alone is 400 Euros!)
