Tour of New York, Boston, Philidelphia and Niagara Falls.

My cousin and I are trying to plan a trip to the cities listed above. I live in Seattle, WA and she lives in Souix Falls, SD. What is the best mode of travel? Bus, rent a car, train, other? Any must sees or avoids that we should know about? We want to see all the usual stuff and historical sites as well. We have been looking at a bus tou,so neither of us would miss out on the sights if we had to drive and pay attention to the roads. Haven't seen very good reviews for the bus tours. Planning on at least 10 days in mid to end of September. Is it best to fly into Boston or New York and if so which airport? Any help would be much appreciated.

The organized bus tours are not well liked. It's more of a do-it-yourself thing.

NYC, Boston and Philadelphia have good Amtrak train service connecting them. Niagara Falls is quite far away from all of them. The best way to include that is to fly from NYC (JFK) or Boston. Fares are affordable. Then rent a car while in NF.

10 days is not a lot of time for all of these destinations. I would suggest dropping Niagara Falls.

You can fly to Boston, NYC or Philadelphia. It really depends on your airfares. You can usually book an "open jaw" ticket where you fly into one of these cities and return from the other, and it prices similarly to a regular round trip. Just select "multiple destinations" and build your own trip with any of the big airfare booking sites (such as Expedia).

It would make sense to fly into Boston and return from Philadelphia (or vice versa). NYC is in the middle.

Before you get too far with planning, check hotel rates. Boston and NYC are both quite expensive in September. Don't know about Philly.

The Freedom Trail in Boston is excellent with a guide, much better than without. Also go up to the second floor of Faneuil Hall for an excellent 15 or so minute presentation.

You don't see the sights while driving in any of these locations. They're all walking destinations. Niagara Falls is, as has been mentioned, not close to any of them. I would do the sights in this order or the reverse:

Start in Philly.

Train to New York.

Fly to Niagara Falls.

Fly to Boston.

You could rent a car for the Niagara Falls leg, but otherwise stick to public transit.

You don't want a car in any of the east coast cities. Parking is very expensive. . You can take Amtrak or buses between cities. Each city has the hop-on hop-off buses that give highlights for that city. They all have great public transportation. Hotels are expensive but Priceline and Hotwire can help. Your trip would be super easy without the Niagara Falls part. Ten days isn't much time, especially with all the travel time. I think you'll need to cut something out or extend the trip. Fly from one of the cities to buffalo for the Falls. If you drive, it eats up the better part of a day each way. Hope this helps.
