Road trip from 1000 Islands to Niagara Falls - American side

Hi there,

We're thinking of taking our 3 boys (4, 7 and 8 yrs) to Niagara Falls. Instead of taking the 401 all the way (on the Canadian side), we thought it might be more interesting to cross over to the States in the 1000 Islands and make our way over to the Falls.

My question is this: Is there anywhere on the way between the 1000 Islands and Niagara falls that would be a fun stopover for the kids? Any sights that shouldn't be missed? Even if we have to stay overnight - that what road trips are about, right? The journey :)

Thanks,

Julia

The Fingerlakes are in the area of the I-90, which is the road you will take to the Buffalo/Niagara region, where there are lovely lakes, parks, hiking trails, waterfalls, and gorges.

Also of interest would be the Corning Museum of Glass and the Strong Museum of Play in Rochester, NY.

Sorry for the late reply. Happy travels!

Hi Julia, Bonjour

Finger lakes are lovely. As well, even before you leave the 1000 Islands, if they haven't seen it already the Skydeck is great, not crazy exciting for kids, but fantastic views & pictures.

Once you hit Watertown, there is the NYS Zoo, which included a petting zoo type of thing. the kids can see all sorts of wild animals.

A little farther is Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse.

Victor, NY is home to the Valentown Museum which was featured on Ghost Hunters.

From there, if you head a bit out of the way, I think you can catch the 96 up to Rochester, where they have the Seabreeze, which should be a hit with the kids. http://www.seabreeze.com/

It's an amusement/Water park.

Once here there are all kinds of things to do this summer. On Old Falls St, (downtown Niagara Falls, NY) there is live music most days. Fridays & Saturdays are vendors, performers, and live music into the night, including The Guess Who, KC & the Sunshine Band (you may to young to know them) and Sloan.

Thursdays, starting July 5 are movie night (this is still the same street) where they will be showing movies, under the starts like, Grease, Spiderman, Hook etc. free of course except your popcorn.

Every Tues and Wed in July & August (again the same place) they have OLD FALLS STREET'S KIDS' CLUB from 11 am to 2 pm.

Any questions, just let me know.

Thank you both for your replies. After doing a bit of research, I think we will stop in Rochester for the Museum of Play. It looks like so much fun!

Watkins Glen State park looks amazing also, but it is about an hour out of our way. Maybe next time!
