Camper drive from NYC to Niagara Falls

Could you please help us with some good ideas. We are grandparents from Holland who are taking our grand daughter of 6 with a camper for a week to see the Niagara Falls. We start in NYC and would like our first stop to be in Lake George. Where else should we stop? Any ideas for camper overnights? Which route to take?

We are very geateful for your help.

The Fingerlakes is a beautiful area, which includes Ithaca, Canandaigua, and Skaneatles.

There is also Letchworth State Park (the Grand Canyon of the East), and Zoar Valley.

Once you get to Syracuse, it's the I-90 straight through to the Buffalo/Niagara area. All of the areas mentioned above are accessible from that freeway.

Happy travels!

Hi Mark and Vera;

There are some rental companies that will not permit their vehicles out of the country, or charge a premium if they do.

Ensure that the rental company notes on the rental agreement that they authorize you to take the camper into Canada. You may be asked by Customs when entering Canada, or when re-entering the US, for this documentation.

Some companies offer unlimited mileage, but only within the US. The rental company will use the onboard GPS to track your usage. The extra per mile charges can add up quickly, so be sure to ask in advance.

Toronto is Canada’s largest city, 4th largest in Canada & the US after New York, Los Angeles & Chicago. You could spend an entire week in Toronto and still have plenty to see and do.

Best Regards

Keep an eye on the time it takes to pick up the RV from the station. Count on 2 hours the very least plus you'll have to do your shopping for groceries etc etc that alos easily takes 2 hours so to get from NY to Lake George same day prob won't be realistic. There's limited free mileage with an RV. Do you have an early pick up?

Thank you for your tips. We have another question. If we have one week with a child of 6 is it maybe too ambitious to drive into Canada? We thought of first going to Lake George and then taking the Black River Trail through the Adirondacks and cross the border at Ogdensburg. Continue to Kingston and Toronto and then to the Niagara Falls and on the way back drive trhouh Buffalo, Binghampton and the Finger Lakes.

However, we could also stay on the US side. what would you advise?

If you are devoted to the idea of including Canada in your trip, I would take the NYC to Buffalo/Niagara route through the US, and, if you have time, do Canada/Toronto at the end.

Toronto is a fabulous, world-class city, with tons to see and do. I'm just not sure how well it fits into a family RV vacation with a limited time-frame, IMO.

You can take the route via 1000 Islands but imo with just one week I'd just stick to the USA. NY state is beautiful.

We are RV newbies & want to go to Niagara Falls from Montauk, NY. We were told that you can't take RV's on some roads: is that true?
