going into the states in January

Hi all

My son (18) is planning on going into the states for a week in January, does he need a passport? he will be flying to Fort Lauderdale.

he went 2 years ago without one and had no problems. When does the new law come into effect.

Thx in advance

He doesn't need one but it is highly recommended, especially for air travel.

If he doesn't bring one make sure he at least brings a driver's licence and birth certificate. Many customs officers I've talked to also recommend bringing a recent bill or paycheck with your name on it, although I usually don't bother and have never had any problems.

No law yet, but passport makes the entire border crossing experience much easier than without a passport.

Passport is also handy when flying for identification purposes when checking in.
