hotels on the cheap

hi-

i'm part of a group of 4 looking to go to lake placid for new years. we've never been to lake placid, and know nothing about it, and were trying to keep it on the cheap. we'd like to be close enough to town to go to bars and restaurants without having to spend a fortune on cabs.

any hotel recommendations?

appreciate any advice! thanks in advance :)

Art Devlin's is a decent family run place, and an easy walk into town. It is very pet friendly so expect lots of dogs, and a dog odour in many rooms. Another reasonable place is the Summit Hotel which is the former Ramada and it is right in town, I noticed the reviews are not that great, the place seems to be under constant renovations so maybe it has inproved. The High Peaks Resort was the former Hilton, and always was a nice place. It's right on the corner of Main and Saranac on the main drag. Perhaps there are deals there as they are tring to attract new clientel.

Lots of restaurants in Lake Placid, not to be missed is Cafe Rustica and Carribean Cowboy. Breakfas and lunches at The Saranac Sourdough. Forget about the bar scene. They are few and far between.

If you are just looking for a room to sleep in without spending a ton of money there is the Northwoods Inn. Located right on Main Street. Where most of the bars and restaurants are. But again its just if you are looking to have a cheap place to sleep. No perks here. Roomers Nightclub typically has a fun New Years Party. Zig Zags usually has a band on New Years, and both are located within feet of the Northwoods Inn. The Northwoods Inn itself has a cute little bar to hang out in before all the festivities start its called the Cabin. You can always run across the street to the T-Bar and chose from a large variety of unique mixed drinks. If you want to venture off the Main Street Lisa G's has great food and they have a large bar and they typically have some sort of live music and festivities! You can have a great time staying on the Main Street and trying out all the different bars. New Years is definitely a good time in Lake Placid! :o) Also I agree with the previous poster about the Caribbean Cowboy! It is a must try!!

We like the Townhouse Lodge. It's nothing fancy, but it's clean and walking distance to downtown.
