What to do - 1 day in Finger Lake Region - mid- April

Hello,

We will be driving from NYC to Niagara Falls, and staying in Auburn for the night. We will spend about 24 hours (from about 2 pm Sat. to 12 pm Sunday).

Any recommended places to visit as we drive through, and in the Auburn area would be much appreciated!

Thanks!!!

Auburn (as posted) or Ithaca (which is the forum this is in)?

What sorts of things do you like to do? Shopping? Hiking? History?

A visit to the Seward House in Auburn would be a great stop but it is only open until 5 pm (last tour is at 4 pm). You don't have enough time for Willard Chapel or the Harriet Tubman home.

If the weather is nice, a walk to the end of the pier at Emerson Park will give you a great view of Owasco Lake. Driving around it or nearby Skaneateles Lake is scenic and relaxing. If you are up for a more strenuous walk, check at Filmore Glen (14 miles south of Auburn down Rt. 38 in Moravia). Doing this will also take you along the west side of Owasco Lake.

A couple of good places to grab a bite to eat in downtown Auburn are Moro's Table and Bambino's.

The village of Skaneateles (6 miles east) has a pleasant main street with beautiful views of its aforementioned lake.

For more nature, go about 10 miles up the west side of Skaneateles (in New Hope) to Carpenter's Falls/Bahar Nature Preserve. There are a couple of trail options there.

No worries, just wanted to make sure we gave suggestions in the right area :)

For nature, Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is nearby.

The best gorges are at the southern ends of the lakes, about 45-60 minutes away, but they are pretty spectacular down there.

If you decide on Montezuma Refuge, be sure to check out the baby eagles at Mud Lock on the Seneca River, a short distance away (off state route 90). The site also features a NYS Canal Lock with lock tender's building.
