The walking tour I usually take my guests on would start at Santa Rosa (the westernmost "must-see") and then walk approximately eastwards via some or all of Santa Rosa, Santo Domingo, San Agustin's, Santa Clara, Casa La Marquesa (good for a coffee stop), Jardin Zenea, San Francisco's, Regional Museum, San Antonio's, Plaza Corregidora, Teatro de la Republica, Congregacion, Plaza de Armas with government buildings. The last stop has a good open-air restaurant for lunch (called 1810). There is also a little alley off the south-western corner full of market stalls selling souvenirs etc. if there's a shopper amongst you!

You could then get a taxi up the hill (25 pesos max) to the convent of Santa Cruz (it's possible to walk but you'll probably be flagging by then!) where you can have a short tour in English then walk round the corner to the mausoleum and mirador for the best view of the aqueduct. For a relaxing unwind (if that's a word) you could even take a taxi up to Holiday Inn Diamante and sit on the roof watching the sun set over the city whilst sipping a margarita (or two).

If you are taking the bus from San Miguel, get off on the ring road before the bus station. This will save you at least 30 minutes. The place to get off is just after the flyover that heads off to the left to B Quintana and where there is a pedestrian bridge over the highway. Many people get off there so it should be easy to identify. The stop has a name but it's quite a while since I did it, and I can't remember. Maybe Steve will know and post. From there, a cab into the centre shouldn't cost more than 35/40 pesos, the same as from the bus station. You can take a cab back there when returning to San Miguel, since all the buses stop there. There are even bus company employees selling tickets.
