1st time at Chatauqua Institution

I'm looking for an inexpensive place to stay near or in Chatauqua for about 4 days in late June. We will have a car. What else is around there to explore?

Many thanks. Barbara Ann

Hi Barbara Ann! Will you be in Chautauqua for the opening of their season June 26? There is so much to do on the grounds that you really don't have to leave. Here are a few things outside of Chautauqua:

1) Panama Rocks: GIANT boulders.

2) Chautauqua Belle: an old-fashioned steamship docking in nearby Mayville.

3) Luci-Desi Museum in Jamestown: did you know Lucille Ball was from Jamestown NY?

4) Not a tourist place, but Wegmans Supermarket located on the road between Chautauqua and Jamestown is THE place to go food shopping, and even eat a meal.

5) Various antique shops with signs posted around.

There are many places to stay near the Instiution. Chautauqua Suites is a new hotel and probably 5 min. from the front gate. Webbs Resort is in Mayville, maybe 5 to 7 min. Closer to Jamestown there are some chain Hotels right off I 86, probably 20 to 30 minutes away.

There are plenty of things to do in our area, those above are great suggestions. If you like wine, we have many wineries in the area, they offer free tastings and are a nice addition to our area.

Rails to trails is a self guided hiking trail, with many trails throughout the county. Numerous golf courses, nearby shopping, a lot of quaint little towns with unique shops. Chautuqua Lake has two different boats that will take you out, the above mentioned Chautaqua Bell , and the Summer Wind, that offers dinner cruises and different themed day and night cruises.

Again the Instiution itself offers much history and activities for all.

Have a good trip, and please feel free to ask more questions.

Check out Bemus Point -

In the summer there are outdoor concerts on the floating stage -

The Casino or Italian Fisherman is a great place for lunch as you can sit on the patio overlooking the lake.

There is also a ferry that you can drive your car on that will take you to the other side of the lake. Since you will be on the otherside you might want to take the ferry across to Bemus Point.

Enjoy Chautauqua Lake is a beautiful area.
