finger lakes in october

what would you recommend for a two night stay in the finger lake area - wine tours and dining? There will be two of us and would prefer a comfortable moderate priced hotel.

There are only 10 days left in October. Yes, wineries and dining are do-able. A list of tour operators is here: ilovethefingerlakes.com/entertainment/wineri… You and I have a few things in common. We're both retired teachers and I went to a fantastic celtic festival in Bethlehem a number of years ago when Wolfstone was playing. Based on that, I would mention that there is a new exhibit that has justed opened at the Johnson Museum on the Cornell campus on illumination http://museum.cornell.edu/ The museum has no entry fee (ie it's free) and has a small Japanese garden that opened just last year. The Finger Lakes has a lot of opportunities for hiking and visiting waterfalls. We have the longest falls on the East Coast in Taughannock Falls State Park. Watkins Glen State Park has 19 waterfalls, including one you can walk behind. All of the parks are listed here: ilovethefingerlakes.com/recreation/statepark… All of the major hotels are represented in the Finger Lakes. You might perhaps like to try one of our many fine bed and breakfasts. They are listed here: ilovethefingerlakes.com/accommodations/bnb.h… Golfing in the fall can be quite nice here as well. We have quite a few that were designed by Robert Trent Jones. The golf courses are listed here: ilovethefingerlakes.com/recreation/golf.htm In the evening, you might want to check out local theatres and concerts. If your home base is Ithaca, the Kitchen Theatre, for example, has a deal with some of the local restaurants for so much off your meal if you come with a ticket stub. http://www.kitchentheatre.org/mainstage.htm Anyway, that should give you a few ideas.

If you decide on Ithaca, Just a Taste and/or Fineline Bistro are great places for dinner.

Are you looking to stay for a weekend or a two-night stay during the week? Most hotels are significantly cheaper during the week, or after October 31st. That being said, the Canandaigua area is a great hub to the Canandaigua Wine Trail, and the nine stops are along a beautiful drive, though the leaves are beginning to drop quickly! There are also several fantastic dining options. You could also consider staying in Geneva, on the north end of Seneca Lake - at the tip of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
