4x4 rental in Kasane

Does anyone know if it is possible to rent a 4x4 in Kasane? We have only managed to get quotes from companies based in Livingstone or Maun; which adds on high pick-up and delivery charges or cross-border charges. We only wanted to rent one for about 4 days going into Chobe NP (Savute) then back to Kasane.

Your help is appreciated!

Why not rent in Maun and drive to Mankwe or Kwai Community Campsite(bushcamp here, but sometimes great game viewing) for the 1st nite. Then the next morning game drive in Moremi for a couple hours and then, within 4 hours, you can be in Savute. Then drive up to Chobe in a day or two, dropping it off in Kasane which is right next to the East side gate of Chobe. Then you will need to pay a pickup charge only, instead of cross border, delivery and pickup charges..... and still have quite a wildlife adventure.

Have you tried this company in Maun? IF memory serves, I think their pickup charge in Kasane was about P3000, and about

Thanks luangwablondes for your reply. I have actually looked through your blog which is very informative for Southern Africa DIY travel!

We have definitely thought about starting in Maun. Our main reason for wanting to go round trip from Kasane is only because it seems like an easier drive. We don't have little 4x4 driving experience so figured this was our only option.

Do you think its possible to get from Maun to Kasane without high dificulties? We would be just two people in one car traveling the first week of Sept 2009. We did get a quote for a one way drop off to Kasane for only 2100

Yep. Its the dry season and the water has mostly receded where you need to be concerned around Moremi. The sandy tracks between South gate towards 3rd bridge in Moremi and in the Chobe Forest are best handled the cool of the day, early morning before the sands heat up. Air forms in between the sand particles and it can be a hard push for some people. A Defender or Land Cruiser would have no issue. Be sure to get instruction on how much air to let down in the tires. Now you can drive it without problems pretty much. Also, if you start out in the early morning, you get out in front of any traffic in either direction and they must assist you if you get stuck. The track is normally just for one vehicle, so they can't ignore you. No worries. Its a good time to see the parks. But do you have reservations for campsites. If not, you're in a world of hurt.

Actually, P2100 sounds right. Thanks.

That is extremely reassuring and great advice! However...we have not made ANY campsite reservations yet since we are just now finalizing the itinerary. We would need reservations for Savute and Chobe sites via DWNP, I assume those are the ones which will cause us trouble? According to your previous link they are fully booked through Oct 2009 already?! Is that true?

Time to reconsider what you are doing. I have a friend in Maun, and she said that that Botswana Parks has nothing to offer. Sorry, you waited too long. …webs.com/botswanadwnpreservations.htm

The usual options- For Chobe- people stay in Kasane overnite. …webs.com/campsitesaccomodations.htm

For Moremi- you camp at Khwai Community Campsites or Mankwe for the North side, Kaziikini on the south or drive in from Maun in the AM and camp on the North side.

Savute- Can't say yet, because I haven't run down anyone yet who can has tried without reservations this year.

So- you have 2 choices. Stay in Kasane the entire time and drive into Chobe each day, skip Savute. Or-

Start in Maun, drive to Kaziikini or Khwai Community Campsite and do a couple days of game drives each day. Then transfer via Savute to Chobe aand camp in one of Kasane's campsites. At least you would get a chance to see some of Savute for maybe 4 hours if you started early from Kwai Community campsite.

Can't believe the DWNP campsites are fully booked already this far in advance!? Do you think tour companies booked up the spaces? This is highly disappointing, I'm not sure what we will do now.

If this is truly the case, then maybe we would stay in Kasane and take game drives/boat cruises from a lodge. Not NEARLY the adventure we wanted. We will go onto Kruger afterwards where we will stay in a lux lodge so we are less interested in taking it 'easy' during the Bots part of the trip.

I will call Monday to see what is available and make a decision then. Thanks for your continued advice!
