We are planning a Taos/Sante Fe trip and are looking for the best day hikes? Suggestions?

Our little B&B uses something called "Day Hikes in the Taos Area" as the definitive guide. There are also Day Hikes in the Santa Fe Area and Day Hikes in the Enchanted Circle as well as several other books written on the subject. You should be able to find them online. With hundreds of miles of trails in National Forest and National Monument outside Taos alone, the choices are in the dozens. Let us know the level of difficulty, time of day and time of year you're planning on being here and that will determine our recommendations. Remember that altitude often governs whether you're going to have access. One of the more popular trails, for example, is the Williams Lake Trail, which we cannot recommend until late May, early June and not after 3 PM during July and August, and never after late September. With entire books devoted to the subject, it's not possible to post even a summary.

If you have the better part of a day, drive north to Questa. About a mile north of the town, turn left onto the Wild Rivers road. There is a visitor's center down the road a few miles.and also several wonderful hikes off the mesa down into the canyons. Big Arsenic Springs, and Little Arsenic springs trails join at the bottom in a big loop, about 4 miles total. And the overlook parking lot has a loop trail that is longer and just as strenuous. Take LOTS of water (2 qt per person) especially now, in the summer. Trail sandals are ok, the trails are in pretty good shape. Beautiful scenery.
