Life in Ruidoso

Having added Ruidoso to our list of places to visit this visit fall as a possible relocation spot in the desert southwest, I've been told that "Ruidoso is more seasonal and sometimes the passes get really bad in the winter." Hmmm . . . does this mean the town is snow-locked at times? Or just that one needs to be careful about how far from Ruidoso proper (i.e. how far up into the mountains) the house you buy is? From our research, Ruidoso's pluses are beautiful natural setting, reasonable cost of housing, low crime rate; minuses are isolation (miles to closest big city/airport, very small year-round population), lack of large hospital facility and (maybe) winter weather.

Hi -

My mother-in-law has a house in Ruidoso (which she will be selling soon). The winters definitely can be harsh there. The roads in town get very icy, and there are times that it is difficult to get in or out of town. There are lots of extra people in town skiing during the winter, and some tourists in the summer going to the casino, golfing or just enjoying the beautiful setting. If you're after a quiet, laid-back lifestyle I think that Ruidoso would fit the bill.

Hello from Ruidoso

As a 33 year resident, I have to say that maybe we have 3 days a year where the roads are snow packed and icy. These are the days we stay inside and enjoy family and hobbies.

Remember, we are located in the southen mountains and our winters are more enjoyable and less harsh than K.C or Chicago. (golfing in the high 30's is not that rare) Come visit as soon as you can and see for yourself. B.T.W., we have a small hospital that offers big city services. Contact me if you want for more info.

Ruidosoman -- thanks for feedback! We will be visiting Ruidoso in early October, staying at the Apple Inn (?) to check out the town to see if it would work for year 'round living for us.

Is there a high demand for vacation rentals during the ski season? One possibility for us might be to have a modest summer place in Ruidoso to escape the heat of Las Cruces if we decide that makes a more location choice for year 'round living. If we go that direction, we'd like to rent out the Ruidoso place to winter vacationers.

I have not moved there yet but have bought land in Alto, just north of Ruidoso - having spoken to folks who own horses there, they say there is not hardly a day during the winter that you can't ride. I have four horses of my own.

The winters are quite mild in Ruidoso. I've seen 10-12 inch snowfall that is gone in 48 hours because it's 68 degrees the next couple of days.
