Arathusa or Kirkman's Kamp?

Hi. I've been reading a lot of different reviews on different safari lodges and I think we have narrowed it down to staying 5 days at either Arathusa or Kirkman's Kamp in October 2014. I know that Kirkman's is a 5 star and that it is probably nicer than Arathusa, but the reviews I've read on both are excellent. Kirkman's would cost us an additional $1000 - $1200 USD more than Arathusa. I know that drinks are included at Kirkman's, but not at Arathusa. We are willing to pay the extra amount if the experience at Kirkman's is that much better than Arathusa, but if not, we would rather have the extra money to spend on other things while we are in South Africa. I've been dwelling on this for days and haven't really found much to compare the two directly. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

Part 2 of the elephant story.. I was shooting video at the time.. and, looking at the video again yesterday, I hear myself yell - on the video - that "somebody needs to know there's an elephant coming through!" I won't say the staff was unconcerned, but neither were they all excited. Just me and the other guests.

That's funny, Dave. Yeah, I can imagine that must have been a little bit unnerving. I can't wait! I've been waiting years to do something like this. My boyfriend makes fun of me because I get engrossed with the simplest of creatures... I can't imagine what I am going to be like with what we will see on safari. But of course, he jokes and says that I'll miss all the cool animals because I will be off over in some corner looking at a lizard. :)

Hey there is nothing wrong with watching a lizard! And some of the ones you may see in SA are beautiful, reds and blues.

Anyway you have a great attitude and with that going for you I am sure you will have a fantastic time. Enjoy the little creatures too

Hi I asked similar question about South-African-Lodges.com being legit (got no reply) so ended up booking directly through the lodges that we decided to stay at next year (Hopefully this pans out. we'll see!) we paid a bit more with directly booking, but no-one could give me an answer about South-African-Lodges hope you have more luck than us. Have a great trip any way. I can't wait for ours in August 2015

Hi. I envy you having to make such a choice!

We were at Arathusa and couldn't have been happier. You won't find the service lacking but the staff won't be hovering over you at all times, either. As for the drinks, we aren't big drinkers but had a gin & tonic or glass of wine whenever we wished and the bill presented on checkout was quite reasonable. And keep in mind, you'll be kept fairly busy most of the time - you probably won't find time for a lot of partying.

Great advice above. I've been to both lodges and I also like both. Personally I would maybe opt for Arathusa due to the lower cost and great view over the waterhole, which should attract some wildlife on a daily basis during October. Also for me a really minor but more personal consideration is the look and feel of the lodge. Kirkmans has a real old style colonial feel to it, with tin roofs, old hunting pictures and even hunting trophies on the wall, etc. Arathusa has a more contemporary African feel with thatch roof etc. However if you prefer the fewer number of guests per vehicle and the larger traversing area, you can't go wrong with Kirkmans. Having said that Arathusa also has a fantastic shared traversing area and the game viewing at both lodges will be great.

Arathusa Standard suites look out at the lake - the Superior suites (some of the largest I have stayed at) face the bush and are very private and a terrific value-for-money.

Folks this is a thread from March 2014 about a trip in October 2014. Presumably the OP has been there and back. The thread was resurrected by post 15 asking about a booking service not about the lodges.

Hi. I should have posted back on what my experience was after my trip, but haven't gotten a chance to yet. Thanks to everyone that gave me input. We ended up staying at Kirkman's, but from I hear on this post and what I heard from folks while on vacation, our stay would have been fabulous at either Arathusa or Kirkman's. We loved Kirkman's! Everything and everyone from the very start to the very finish exceeded our expectations. We liked that there were only 6 to a vehicle. I think that I would have really liked the watering hole at Arathusa, but we still got to see plenty of wildlife (monkeys, antelope, water buffalo, wart hogs, all kinds of neat birds, etc). in our camp. We even had a bull elephant in our camp the one night and had to be escorted to dinner early. We also heard lions roaring the one night from our room. We did book through South-African-Lodges.com and everything was good... perfectly legit.
