Albuquerque to Las Cruces Drive, any suggestions?

I'm driving with my Mom from Albuquerque to Cruces some weekend in the next month, just there and back in one day, not staying over, to pick up a table. Is there anything interesting to see or do on the way to break up the drive a little? And does anyone have any dining recommendations? It would have to be a place that stays open continuously between lunch and dinner because we'll be reaching Las Cruces at an awkward time. Thanks.

In Socorro there is a nice restaurant/brewpub Socorro Springs. Great food!

In Old Mesilla in Las Cruces a fun place to dine is La Posta. Also a quick visit to Stahmann's Pecan Farm would be fun.

Just south of Socorro is Bosque del Apache Nat Wildlife Refuge. This time of year there are thousands of birds including cranes, geese and more. Quite the experience.

You might want to visit El Camino Real Intl. Heritage Center, located between Socorro and T or C. Exit 115 and follow signs. This is a wonderful museum with lots of information on the Camino Real, which stretched from Mexico City to Santa Fe. Well worth a stop. Closed Mon-Tues; hours 8:30 to 5:00, admission $5.00.
