Phu Quoc in early October

My husband and I are planning on spending two weeks in vietnam ( our first trip to Vietnam). We were thinking of spending 3-4 days in Phu Quoc. My questions are:

1. Is the weather ok in early October or are we better off going to Nha trang for the beach. We are after a quieter laid back place rather than a commercialised place

2. Can you fly to Phu Quoc from Da Nang? What are our best options to get to the island?

Thanks

It’s better to go to Phu Quoc Island. October is the starting of dry season there. Meanwhile, Nha Trang is affected by rainy season in the central of Vietnam, so sea water is dusty and currents are strong.

From Danang, you have to fly to Saigon and connect to fly to Phu Quoc Island with Vietnam airlines. This is the fastest way. Some people take speedboat from Rach Gia. But this option is only for person who includes Mekong Delta into their holiday. From Can Tho city in Mekong Delta, they take a bus to Rach Gia (2.5hrs) and then get a speedboat to the island (2.5hrs).

Yeah, have to agree with littlevietnamtours03

Phu quoc is very laid back and not commercialised. It is similar to Bali 30 years ago and the people, beaches and cuisine that is available is amazing.

It is easy to incorporate the Mekong into the trip to PQ which can be a whole new adventure for only a couple of days out of your itinerary.

For more info on PQ, check out www.visitphuquoc.info

good luck,

Ong lang beach north of Duong dong town is a bit more private and remote. The resorts there offer a little more tranquillity but it is a bit of a trek if you want to dine at the night bbq or town restaurants.

I prefer Long beach, as the option of walking to town on the beach is to my liking.

FYI, if you locate Mai spa on a map or Google earth, the main restaurant strip is right outside this resort. Hope that helps with your bearings.

Thanks for your help Mark. Any recommendation on a place to stay with a beachfront bungalow. We are willing to spend a bit more on accommodation for this part of the trip ( my first ( and

Possibly only trip ) where I am leaving the kids at home with the grandparents).

Woohoo PoemKM

This is where it gets tricky!! You could stay at La verandah or similar and I believe that it is absolutely stunning but again, a bit of a trek to town.

We have stayed at Mai spa in Beachfront bungalows in May this year and August last. The resort is lacking a bit on the landscaping side of things but to be able to walk from your balcony straight onto the beach or enjoy a beer or wine overlooking a stunning PQ sunset every evening was amazing.

The location is perfect with the local restaurant strip directly outside and the walk along the beach to the night bbq only takes about 10 minutes.

As with beach resorts everywhere they seem to be a bit more expensive. Expect to pay about $70ish a night here including breakfast.

Check out the reviews on other hotels/ resorts and you can fine tune your stay.

Enjoy,

Mark

Thanks mark. I am also trying to see if I can fit in the Mekong into my trip now that you have suggested it but not sure best option. I only have 14 days in vietnam. What I am thinking is - 4 days Hanoi ( included halong bay, and hills), then 3 days hoi an. Then fly to Phu Quoc ( connecting flight at hcmc) and stay for 3 days, then fly to HCMC for 3 and possibly do a day trip to Mekong. However now thinking would it be better to fly from Phu Quoc to can tho ( if they do flights) spend a night there and then make it back to HCMC by car or bus. The solution would be more time but I only have two weeks.

PoemKM,

It is entirely up to you, but I think your planning is a little too ambitious.

You have seven destinations on your list.

I was born in Saigon, and the times when I visited - those occasions when I had only two weeks - I always limited the trip to four destinations (including Saigon, when I use it as a hub.)

When I decided to go to the North, I would fly out from Ha Noi.

Don't forget the wait for the taxi and the time it takes for the transfer to and from the airport (or the time spend in transit).

Gleaming through your itinerary, I see at least 20 hours in transport, which really translates to 3 days.

But you can certainly do it, if you want to.

Yeah I agree with John except I think that you will be flying in and out of Saigon??

Here is a possibility that I think is manageable but will tick most of your boxes.

Land Saigon and transit straight up to Hanoi (which is pretty much the norm IMO)

2 nights Hanoi

1 night Halong

1 night Hanoi then flight to Danang (Hoi an)

3 nights Hoi an then flight to Saigon.

1 night Saigon

Early morning private tour through Mekong ending in Can tho

1 night Can tho

Early morning Cai rang floating market tour then explore Can tho, dry markets etc...

1 pm flight Can tho to Phu quoc (35 minutes $40) only 1 flight daily

3 nights PQ

Flight to Saigon

2 nights Saigon with late checkout for flight home.

If you only wish to do 1 night Saigon you could tack another night onto Hoi an or PQ.

Food for thought :-)

Thanks Mark and John P. yes agree it is doable and the proposed itinerary mark put forward would tick all my boxes but very full on. Maybe it would be more relaxing to spend a few more days at hoi an to get our relaxing beach bit rather then spend fair bit of time travelling to pho quoc? So many lovely places to visit!
