Ferry from Mawlamyine to Hpa An--still running?

Is the ferry from Mawlamying to Hpa An still operating?

Is it a good thing to take the ferry or should I just drive (I'll have a car and driver)?

You can go to Pha An from Mawlamyaing by car directly through Zarthapyin Bridge now.

Thank you for your reply.

I'm not interested in where I can go by car--I read in Lonely Planet that the ferry from Mawlamyine to Hpa An is a very nice trip along the river. I enjoy seeing life along the rivers in Asia!

Do you know if the ferry is still operating and on what days?

Are there other nice, short river trips you can recommend in Myanmar (2-6 hour trips)?

For the short Boat trip, Maw la Myaing to Pha An is good choice~3:30 hr only.

The next one is Yangon-Twante. It is also 3 hr. However the Mawlamyaing Pha An has Upper Class while Twante has no good place to Hang on.

Twante has no place to "hang on"??? ...that's scary! Do Burmese people float pretty good? How many would you think I need to grab on my way over the side of the boat if there is an emergency?

Sounds really authentic. I'll have to check this out. Could be an exciting way to end my trip to Myanmar!

Thanks for the tip. I'm turning on google for some more details.

River, do you know what days the ferries operate?

I read that it is better to go from Mawlamyiang than to go from Hpa An--is that true?

....also, you are saying "Pha An" but Lonely Planet and others say Hpa An. which is correct?

Thx,

If I were you I would check Thorn Tree travel forum because as far that I know the Government Ferry no longer runs so a private boat is your only option.

I was in Mawlamyne in January 2012 and the government ferry doesn't run anymore. There is however a private boat going to Hpa An in the mornings (if enough people otherwise you have to charter the whole boat). It is organized by the Breeze Guesthouse in Mawlamyne, the boat ride needs to be booked there and they keep a list of people for each day.

The boat ride took about 4-5 hours and we did one stop in a village on the way.
