Looking for a winery with accomodation - but central

Hi

Visiting Franschhoek in March - we would love to stay at one of the wine estates as opposed to a guesthouse etc - can anyone recommend one that is also walking distance for central Franschhoek?

Thanks

A difficult one! Grand Provence is a possibility, but even that is on the fringe of Franschhoek, and a 1km walk into town. Dieu Donne is a bit further but an uphill walk home (although there is a free shuttle to the village available last I heard). Chamonix is a little closer to town on the same road but the accommodation is fairly basic. Mont Rochelle Hotel is in the same area as the vineyard but is an upmarket hotel, and again a 2km walk to town..

Hey. Walking means walking. There are no wine estates where you roll out of your bedroom into the High street. Grande Provence at 10 mins is definitely in Walking Distance. It has a possible problem in that the cheapest accommodation for two people is R15,000 per night - over £1,000.

Dieu Donne has a separate Farm with accommodation. This is 15 mins walk from town and is much more reasonable at R1,095 for a double room including breakfast.

Cape Chamonix is 5 mins closer. They have self catering cottages which cost as little as R600 for a couple.

Bo La Motte is the other end of town and also has self catering cottages between R600 and R1,000 per cottage per night.

If you want to go expensive again Klein Genot costs around R3,000 per night for a double B&B and is about 20 mins walk.

La Bourgougne is slightly closer on the same road. They again have self catering cottages with beatiful views for under R1,000 per night.

La Petite Ferme is really nice with double cottages B&B for around R1,600 pn. This is probably nearer to 30 mins walk.

Mont Rochelle, as ctrunfree says is more upmarket, around R3,000 pn Double B&B. Very good views and about 20 mins level walk. This has maybe the best wines on this list.

So lots of choices from Ultra Luxury to comfortable private cottages. All on wine estates.

Thanks for your suggestions - they all sound like good possibilities. We are walkers so 20 - 30 mins is no problem, we just didnt want to be somewhere too far out which would require transport.

The thing is I don't think I'd be recommending walking to or from any of these places at night...while security is one concern, poorly lit roads and traffic (no footpaths) would be the main concern
