Addo Elephant Park - would appreciate help with planning.

Hi,

We are making plans to visit SA for the first time at the end of October for 17 days. We will have one night in Addo. Landing at PE at noon. Plan to hire a car and drive to Addo, hoping to arrive early afternoon & taking a guided drive, & the following morning do a self drive, leaving in the early afternoon for Tsitsikama.

I'm trying to choose accommodation (between $80-$100) and wonder how important it is to stay inside the park. If we stay 15-20 minutes away are we likely to be stuck in queues getting in & out the park and will we miss game viewing opportunites? We have only a short time there so would love to make the most of it.

Thanks very much for your help.

There's no real danger of traffic in that area, so there shouldn't be any queues, but I agree with the previous post, stay in the park. The accommodation is simple but comfortable - rondavels are particularly cute and overlook the waterhole plus nearest the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Otherwise the cottages or chalets are also comfortable.

If you stay in the park you can get into the game viewing area earlier than day visitors, so you can get up and do an hour or so before breakfast!

We stayed in a cottage in the park in November and would thoroughly recommend it. Basic accommodation but fun. And it's the only way to do a drive after 6pm.

We went as a family with two youngsters from the UK.We were amazed by the sheer size & beauty of the place.

We went at Christmas, which I think is really quite " high season", but no queues to get in & roads in the park generally very good with frequent great views of the various wildlife.

The Elephants are just so amazing & an absolutely wonderful testament to what SA has achieved with regard to protecting these wonderful animals.

You'll have a wonderful experience.
