Addo - stay inside or out?

Hi, I will be arriving in PE with view to driving along Garden route to cape Town mid- August this year. Would like to have a couple of days game viewing first - have read good reports on Addo - any advice on where to stay? The private game reserves like Shamwari are way above my budget - was thinking either inside Addo at ? River Bend - seems a bit more affordable than others - or outside ? Woodhall or similar. Or at Addo Rest Camp itself? Don't mind paying the extra for River Bend if it would really make a difference to our game viewing - but don't need luxury!

At such short notice you may need to stay where you can get in.

We stayed at Addo and Shamwari in the same self-drive trip. We liked the cabins in Addo itself and would go back tomorrow.

If you can't get accommodations in Addo, I suggest Elephant House, just outside.http://www.elephanthouse.co.za/

Hi Rosie012, Going north of PE to Addo is a great idea, but please remember there is more than just Addo north of PE. There are wonderful little towns with a lot of history like Somerset East and Graaff-Reinet. If it's game you're interested in, there is a Big 5 game reserve just outside Somerset East. visit http://www.somerseteasttourism.co.za for more information on Somerset East.

Addo Rest Camp Accommodation is, IMO, one of the best places to stay in South Africa! It is much better to stay here than outside the park as you can go into the game viewing area as soon as the gate opens (6:00am in summer 7:00 am in winter). This is by far the best time for game viewing and we have seen our best Lion, Hyena and buffalo sightings in the first hour or so. You can also go on night time drives in the park game viewing vehicles if you are staying in the Rest Camp. You have to leave the park before 5:30 pm in the winter if you are staying outside.

River Bend lodge is a different area. It is a little north of the Main Game Viewing area towards the Zurberg Mountains. It is a very different place to stay as it is a more luxury type lodge rather than self-catering but it costs around 5 times more than a chelet for two in the Rest Camp. If you want to stay in a luxury hotel and go out for one or two game drives per day (which will be in the public area of the park) this is one way to do it. But if your goal is to see and learn as much as possible about the indigenous wildlife then I would stay in the rest camp and spend most of the day driving in the viewing area - it takes only 5 mins to pop back to your chalet during the day if you need to but there are also picnic areas in the middle of the Game Area where you can take your lunch.

The good news is that there is still quite a bit of availability in August. SANParks give realtime availability and booking on-line -

The SANParks site also gives you lots more information. If you want more detail also go back and look at previous posts on here :

Hi rosie

This will give a good balance and you get a day of luxury. To drive from the Main Rest Camp to Riverbend is pretty short - should only take about 15 mins.

The great part about Riverbend is that except for their consession area, they also have their own private game reserve area. The advantage of that is that Addo only has the animals that were found in the area naturally (as per SANParks regulations) while Riverbend's reserve also has the "other" animals which weren't here originally.
