Driving from Philadelphia 30th St. Station to Princeton

We'll be driving from Philadelphia 30th St. Station to Princeton (US 1) on a Saturday. From looking at maps, I assumed I'd take 95 North around Trenton to US 1 and then north on US 1.

All of the mapping services (Mapquest, etc.) say to get off of 95 in Pennsylvania where it crosses US 1 and then take that north through Trenton.

Anyone with local knowledge about the better of these two alternatives? Would it be any different for the reverse trip (also on a Saturday?)

Thanks!

Any reason you are driving and not taking the train?

Some Amtrak trains stop in Princeton.

Or you can take SEPTA and connect with NJ Transit in Trenton. This connection is deliberately timed to allow passengers to do this.

We'll need a car while we're in Princeton. Car rentals in Princeton are not convenient on Saturdays and we'll want to return the car to 30th Street in any event.

You should follow the signs upon leaving the train station for 95 North (ask where you get your car). Basically, you will be taking the expressway (676)through a part of Philly, for less than 5 minutes, before you pick up 95 North. Take 95 North approximately 35 minutes, and you will cross the Scudders Mill Bridge which separates PA and NJ (you will see signs for New Hope, PA on one side, and Lambertville, NJ on the other side). 95 North becomes 295 South (to add to your confusion!), once it crosses that bridge into NJ. Note that this is not a toll bridge; but an overpass bridge. Continue to follow 295 S to the Route 1 North exit, approx 15 minutes after the Scudders Mill Bridge. 1 North goes into Princeton Twp.

This is a very easy ride. When you get off on 295, Route 1 N will be a major highway with 6 lanes and lots of shopping all along the road. On your reverse trip, take 1 S to 295 North (sign will say Pennsylvania). Just do the reverse, 295 North turns into 95 South. Follow signs for Central Philadelphia when you get to the city, and follow the signs for 30th Street Train Station (bears to the right).

Not sure where you're going in Princeton, but let me know if you need more help.

Thanks! So you recommend taking 95/295 around Trenton rather than Route 1 through Trenton?

If you are going into Princeton, there is no reason for you to drive through Trenton on Route 1 to get there. Just stay on 95/295 to Route 1 North (I think the sign will say 1 North/New Brunswick, which is north of Princeton). There should not be much traffic on 95/295 on a Saturday, though Route 1 will have plenty of shoppers out.

Those directions were correct. I make the drive quite often. I have a student at Princeton and usually fly into Philadelphia. When you are on 95 North, it automatically turns into the 295 South just before you exit. That is about 10 or so miles after you pass the New Hope exit. You get off at the exit AFTER Princeton Pike. It is exit number 67 for Rt. 1, N. New Brunswick. There is a fork at that exit Left for New Brunswick and Right for South Trenton. Be sure and stick to the LEFT toward New Brunswick and NOT S. Trenton. That fork comes up fast just as you are exiting, so be sure and stay left. If you are going to the Princeton University area, it's only about 4 or 5 miles down till you hit Alexander or Washington St, which you can take into Princeton.
