Jersey City - side trips

Hello -

My husband, 4-yr old son, and I will be traveling to Jersey City in September. We plan to explore the NYC/Jersey City area for 4-5 days and then go outside the area for 2-3 days, but not really sure where yet. We were thinking Philedelphia or somewhere on the shoreline.

Thanks!

Philly is an outstanding day trip or overnight trip -- full of history, lots of 18th century buildings open to the public, many great museums, very walkable, very charming. You can get there by train and won't want a car

Jersey Shore is or Delaware shore is famous but you may have to book early depending on when in September you plan. You'll need a car

If you're looking for lakes instead of ocean we can help you too -- let us know

Philly is about 2 hrs away from Jersey City and I think it would be worth a visit. If you like casino / gaming, you can combine a trip to Philly with a trip to Atlantic City. Start by going to Philly early in the day (2 hrs southwest from Jersey City). Spend the day in Philly, then drive about an hour east to get to Atlantic City. Play some games, visit the beach there, watch a show, and then either drive back 2 hrs north to Jersey City, or spend the night in AC.

Philadelphia would be a great side trip.

Will you have a car? If not and you want beach time at the Jersey shore you can reach some nice Towns such as Spring Lake by train.

I would go to Atlantic City only if you want to gamble. It has many negatives which make it undesirable.

I agree with Susie's characterization of Atlantic City. If you want to gamble then it's fine, else skip it

Thanks for your reply. We were planning to rent a car. What are some good places/beaches along the shore? I was looking at Wildwood, Cape May, Ocean City. Trying to find places with other things to do besides beach stuff.

For Jim Thorpe(its a borough, not a village) you will need a car. There is plenty to do for two days(steam train excursion white water rafting on the Lehigh River, etc)
