Do you prefer not to spend time in Boston at all, just part of your time, or are you just saying that you do not have to stay in downtown Boston?

For condos and other rentals, you can start by Googling "Boston Vacation rental" and see what kind of sites come up. One that will surely come up is VRBO - Vacation Rentals By Owner - www.vrbo.com. You can chek the Boston area, outlying areas, and anywhere in western Mass, NH or ME.

In NH, check the state tourism website www.visitnh.gov. You get check lodging by region, and look at everything from resorts to B&B, inns, cottages, hotels, etc. You should be able to find resorts with condos and cottages, and especially ones with golf courses. I am not a golfer, so cannot be much help there. But I am sure that, anywhere you choose in NH or ME, or any other state, there should be decent golfing nearby.

For historic, of course, Boston is, well, Boston. Historic. South of Boston is Plimouth Plantation, an excellent restoration of the original settlement (though not exactly at the original location, I believe). To the west is Old Sturbridge Village, west of Worcester (the locals pronounce it Wooster). And north of Boston is Salem, home of the witch trials, etc. Also Lexington and COncord, MA. And a ton more.

You might also consider Portsmouth, NH and Portland, ME. Portsmouth is a small city with a beautiful old downtown are with great restaurants, shops, cafes, entertainment. also in the downtown area is the restoration village of Strawberry Banke. Portland is a lrger city, but considerably smaller than Boston. The Old Port is similar to Portsmouth's, but more extensive. There are also some wonderful galleries and a minor league baseball team. Both cities are port cities, and there are a variety of ways to get out on the water. Your wife and daughter will love the shopping in both places. And of course, the coast of Maine and NH are rich in history, lighthouses, shipwrecks, old forts, etc.

Other than all that, there are a ton of beautiful places up and down the coast to spend a week. You might want to Google "Golf NH" and "Golf Maine" and see what you find. When you find the place you want to golf, I am sure there will be a host of places to stay that will satisfy your family's interests.

By the way, I believe that some of the resorts in NH's Lakes Region and White Mountains have some highly touted golf courses.

thank you so much for your help... we do not have to stay in boston the entire time or at all...i should have also stated we would like to get a reasonable price placed to stay. i know new england is much more exspensive than the midwest for lodging. should we stay in the same area the entire trip or should we move around. i was thinking about staying in boston on the weekend unless we can find a week long condo or cabin rental...so far what i have seen it appears that portsmouth would be a good central location. on saturday the 20 yr old is flying in and we have to pick her up at the airport at portsmouth. golf is optional....it appears a day drive up to the north would also be a good idea..we are just looking for ideas..thanks again..

Portsmouth has some advantages to it. It is close enough to Boston that you could easily go in for a day. You have a variety of ways to get there - drive in, drive to an outlying T stop and use mass transit to get around, you could take a bus, or you could go to Durham and take the Amtrak. The car or car and T would give you the greatest flexibility to go and especially return when you want. Boston is a great city day and night.

Portsmouth is also a great destination city, as well as an easy jump off point for the Maine, coast, the White Mountains, the Lake Region of NH, or a drive into the beautiful coutryside and small towns and cities of the Monadnock and Dartmouth/Lake Sunapee regions. An hour and a half will take you to any of those places. You will also have an easy drive of 10 - 30 minutes to any number of ocean beaches.

All the other options are good choices, too, for their own reasons. But if you choose Portsmouth to center your stay, you will not be disappointed.

I agree that the Portsmouth area would be a good base for your trip. You may take a look at a vacation rental house on the coast- either hampton, wells,me, york,me. try www.vacationrentalhomes.com

Sometimes we have a nice hot week mid-june and your family would enjoy being on the beach.

Strawberry Banke in Portsmouth is a neat historical place to visit - and its within walking distance of downtown portsmouth. The kids would like the activity around hampton beach-

For shopping the kittery, me outlets are a fun day of shopping, or in portsmouth there is the fox run mall for tax free shopping.

If you want a special dinner visit wentworth by the sea- in newcastle (about 10 min from Portsmouth) it is a beautifully restored hotel and restaraunt located right on the water.

There is so much more to see in this area- I think your family would love it!!

A condo at Hampton Beach will be fine with your two kids especially at their ages they're at, it actually couldn't be more perfect for them for the week.

Hampton Beach always always gets a bad rap. Always, it's not for couples, singles, yuppies or highly intelligent air heads! It's a beautiful beach with white sand and freezing cold water with big waves. Tacky and I mean tacky little shops along the strip with geeky t-shirts and junk that kids love. What are you going to do about that, they're there and probably will be there for the next several years that we're on the planet! It certainly won't stop families from bringing there kids to this beach. The Hampton Beach Casino has concerts at night for teenagers and young adults. You can check out the website to see who's playing there, I've seen some interesting people there in my life. There hasn't been any one that jumped out at me lately though. It's kind of geared for the young uns!

If you have bad weather or no sun or anything while you're at this condo? Just get in your car and take off for the day. Go right up the coast. You have so many options from this one point. You could drive up the coast to the Wentworth By the Sea in New Castle, NH. Drive further along for Portsmouth where there's tons & tons of neat sites and attractions. Take one of the whale watching tours or cruise the Piscataqua river. One absolute place to head to is Strawberry Bankes where there's an historical museum here and you need to cross over to Prescott Park because this time of year all their flowers will be in bloom! They have wonderful shows performed at night a lot of times in the summer months. Fom here you could always drive over one of the 3 bridges to the Kittery Outlets to shop and dine. Check out Bob's Clam Hut or Robert's Grill & Market. Head further up the coast to York, ME. SO much to do in such little time! You could keep going up the coast to Wells, ME, tons of antique shops and neat shops along the way. In York, ME. look for Fiona's Porch. It's just past the Kittery Outlets on the right as you turn for the York Hospital. Definitely try to stop in if you can, it's got wonderful trinkets and neat displays throughout the shop.

You could also head south instead of north down the coast from Hampton Beach and drive to Newburyport and have lunch at "Not Your Average Joe's" Restaurant. Your family will really like it here, there's tons of neat shops and bistros to check out.

You could drive further all along Rte 1-B and head to the Crane Estate in Ipswich. It's incredible and this time of year there tours of the estate would be a perfect time of year to explore this gem. Head to Woodman's or the Clam Box for lunch (clams!) while youre at there.

You're going to be very busy here! Have a wonderful time and if you need any more ideas, just holler we'll have them for you.

Do you and your family like mexican tortilla's by any chance? Look for La Chiquitas along Hampton Beach when you're there. They have the BEST and I mean the BEST home made fresh tortilla's made up every single day that we've ever ever had around this whole region. They're SO good that they won 2007 Best in NH.

There's a lot of rip off little food shacks along the beach, some are good, some are wicked tacky. This mexican one is very good. Sabo's was always my favorite one over there, if it's still there. They have really good wraps. Look for the lemonade stands along the strip when you're out walking along it. They use fresh squeezed lemons and just SO good. Check out Brown's Lobster Pound in Seabrook past the Hampton Beach bridge. It's SO good here, Markey's across the way is another gem.

Have a wonderful time, like I said, you're going to be VERY busy for the week you're here. There's a lot to see and do.

The Sand Castles will be at the beach when you're here....look for this spectacular event near the "hatch shell" across from the casino, you'll see all the people checking them out.
