Portsmouth or Manchester?

My husband and I will be going to Boston for a few days in April and we want to take a day trip to either Manchester or Portsmouth. We have never visited either. Which one would be better for a day trip? We wont be staying overnight.

As far as our interests go, we are pretty easy to please. We would be happy just to explore any town with history, culture, and interesting architecture. These are the reasons we love Boston. We don't need to have anything major, like amusement parks or anything. Good food is definitely a plus.

Hopefully you end up going to Portsmouth. If you were planning on this day trip in May it would be good if you got to take the Isle of Shoals cruise:

This way you'll be able to decide for yourself how pretty Portsmouth Harbor is.

Manchester definitely has a lot of neat restaurants and places to go these days, there's no doubt about it. You know, no one ever mentions Piccola's Ristorante it's located at 815 Elm Street right up the street from the Verizon Wireless Arena. It's just wonderful there! In fact, it's very close to our hearts around here:

There's some good parts of Manchester and there's some shady areas, like any city. Basically a lot of us shop, dine and get entertained at the Verizon Wireless Arena! Manchester also has Bedford right beside it and believe it or not, the best Home Goods in the state is there. Their Marshall's is pretty good too compared to the ones located around the state! But if you want unique charming shops? You have to head over to the seacoast to Portsmouth! Something about it there that you can't beat with a stick! It's definitely quaint, no doubt about it. It's extremely charming and it's really kind of neat walking through Portsmouth, browsing through their many many shops, restaurants and bistros.

One of them is "Popovers on the Square" at Market Square, look for it!

Another place that we really like is the Rosa, look for that, it's reasonable and very consistant here, it's been in Portsmouth for years. Great place to go for lunch OR dinner...

It also would be really good if you got the chance to check out the Strawbery Banke Museum, talk about history? It's awesome seeing this Museum, it's something like Sturbridge Village, you'll see it and know what I mean:

Walk across the street to Prescott Park, it will be really pretty starting in late April most likely, because there flowers will be JUST amazing, wait till you see them!

Have a great day!
