Will I be disappointed?

A little background info.....my best friend and I have been making an annual trek to Vegas for about the last 7 years. We are thinking of going for a change of pace and spending 3 nights in Reno instead. We always try to make a different experience in Vegas, staying at a different hotel, eating at different places. I've been to Reno twice before but it was a family trip with a toddler in tow so I liked being in one place. Just wondering if it would be "enough" for a girls' trip.

Thanks for you input!

If you can imagine downtown Vegas, without the Fremont St. attraction, you have downtown Reno. It's just different than Vegas. Three days would be about right, though you might consider a rental car. That's because Lake Tahoe, even for a few hours, is a must-see, if you're coming this far. The Peppermill is the nicest casino, and is worth a visit.

Totally agree that the Peppermill is great, but you will probably be disappointed with the overall experience. You can do a night downtown, but there are about five casinos worth hanging out in and they are like....well downtown Vegas without the excitement. And trust me, I love Reno.

Well, you said you've been to Reno under different circumstances, so you already know the layout of the downtown and perhaps a bit about the city. I think with three days you could easily occupy your time: a spa day, a day trip up to Tahoe and/or Virginia City, indulging in some of the newer, hipper restaurants and bars near the downtown/Midtown area, hiking, tubing the river...just to name a few things you could do. As long as you don't have an unrealistic expectation of it being a Vegas Experience, you guys will have a great time!

Someone told me that Reno was like Atlantic City without the ocean.

Let me qualify myself before I start. Other than the airport, I have not been in Reno so I cannot directly answer your question. My comments are neither positive or negative about Reno as I have no base to work from, so please do not misunderstand the following as anything negative about Reno.

If you are heading out to that part of the state, how about spending two of the nights in Stateline (south Lake Tahoe) with one night in Reno. You already have a "feel" for Reno - outside of the casinos. A day to check them out seems adequate (if you find something you really like, you can plan a return trip sometime). Stateline offers a close clustering of nice casinos along with the beautiful Lake Tahoe scenery. You can spend the day out in what I consider one of the most beautiful areas in the world, and spend the evenings gambling in the casinos.

As long as you don't go in comparing it to Vegas, you should be alright. I would definitely visit the Peppermill and downtown to casino hop. Maybe a side trip to Tahie or Virginia City.

Also I disagree, Reno isn't like AC IMO. Everything in Reno is much more spread out and ACis pretty contained to one area, even the marina area is a short jitney ride away and has 2 hotel/casinos in it. AC also has more Vegas like quality hotels like Borgata and Revel.

Reno is really its own place, unlike Vegas and AC - It has some really GREAT restaurants (Try Campo on the river downtown) and some awesome hole in the wall places for great food on the cheap (Cal Neva dowtown $4.99 steak and eggs is awesome, The Awful Awful burger at the Little Nugget casino downtown is crazy good.) You must realize that Reno is the polar opposite of Las Vegas - instead of constant stimulus it is pretty laid back. Prices of hotel rooms and restaurants reflect that also - much cheaper to actually be there! There are pretty much two choices of places to stay - either downtown or out at Peppermill or Atlantis. Me personal favorite is Atlantis, it is about 10 minutes by car to downtown or 20 minutes by bus. Atlantis has fantastic dining and recently remodeled rooms - The Spa at Atlantis can't be beat. Peppermill also has newer rooms in the Tuscany Tower and lots of restaurant choices in house that are great!. I hope you give Reno a shot - I love it there and there is so much to do either in town or a short car ride away (As mentioned before Virginia City and Tahoe are both within 30 - 40 minutes by car!)

I was in Reno for the first time in June after making 1 or 2 trips to Vegas each year for the last 6 years and I had a really good time. No, I won't go to Reno in place of my Vegas trips, but it was definitely worth doing, for me at least. I think the real key is to go without having expectations of Vegas. Reno is not Vegas fun, but there is fun to be had there.

By the way, The Peppermill is an awesome hotel.

I really like Reno, completely different atmosphere than vegas it has a small town rural feel to it. If you ski or snowboard I would suggest going in the winter. The lake is beautiful and well worth spending time driving around the lake. Oh I've been quite lucky there :-)
