Poker Rooms

I am hoping someone can help me with information on the poker rooms in Reno. Often times, a casino will have a poker room but not very good 'attendance' and also have scheduled tournaments that no one shows up for.

I'd like to find out which places actually have good live games going and have well attended tournaments (2/up tables).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not personal experience, but from a friend who plays regularly: apparently Atlantis is well attended in the morning and evenings; Peppermill is liveliest during the afternoon and evenings.

My take: I've been playing in Reno since relocating to the west coast eight years ago.

Downtown- only reliable room is the ElDorado. round the clock no-limit cash game, and early morning regulars that 3-6 play limit and 1-5 stud (yes, stud), will feed into a 10am MTT that gets 2 tables on slow weeks and at least 30+ alternates during busy times. (new years weekend, then mid-jan , my last two trips). Other advertised MTT are weeknight evenings, and get 1 or 2 tables.

Other downtown is sketchy, slow or completely unreliable. CalNeva- nothing Sands- limit only, sometimes SilverLegacy- poker tek tables, very little action. CircusCircus and Harrahs have recently abandoned their poker rooms.

Atlantis- Beautiful poker room has had management issues the last few years, resulting in little tourist play and leaving fewer regulars that have stayed. Morning MTT gets a questionable number, sometimes one table sometimes more. I have given up hope on playing a morning MTT here. UNsure of any other times. Cash game situ is similar, just never know what kind of game you may find. The few regulars that play strike me as nit-burgers, playing for the HH and rakeback due them, for as little as 25 hours of play they get paid back. Exploitable perhaps, but you can only win what is on the table, which sometimes is not much. which leads me to the...

Peppermill- the only true room worth playing in my opinion. beautiful, large, spacious, well-run. great assortment of limit, no limit games, reliable MTTs with good structures and regular players afternoon and evening tournaments run as advertised. Regular 4-8 O/8 game as well.

Grand Sierra- I don't play here. Many people do. A few years ago I walked in here, noticed that the entire casino was a dump, and still played poker. The poker room was a dump as well, with an hours-old "free buffet" for poker players sitting in a corner. That experience cured my curiosity. To be fair, I've "heard" its greatly improved. The casino has been taken over by yet another management company, and probably has a new manager or two for poker.

Other insights- word has it, and I did get a release, that Atlantis has hired Mike Gainey from Peppermill to lead the poker room. This has to be viewed as a positive sign that they are serious about turning around the room and its lost reputation. I think this is a notable memo that is worth mentioning.

Sparks-NV- John Asuaga's Nugget- 3-6 limit goes here, and a weird structure MTT in the morning that I played once. So weird, I haven't been back. Perhaps their web or others can be more clear on the structure.

Thats about it. Boomtown advertises poker, but it hardly goes, and is spread limit anyways. No MTTs. abbreviation alert, sorry- for those of you interested lurkers, an MTT is poker parlance for Multi-Table Tournament. So there, hope that, and all of this helps...
