1st timer

My husband and I are Vegas frequenter. For a change, we are thinking of going to Reno at the end of March. I would appreciate it if some one could please tell me about downtown. I am trying to decide where to stay and when I picture downtown I see old las vegas. A fun place to visit, but not a place I enjoy staying. I am deciding between the Peppermill and the Eldorado. Any suggestions?

Also, how far in Reno from Lake Tahoe? I keep reading that it is close, but no miles or drive time is given.

Thanks!

It's really hard to compare Reno to LV. Downtown Reno is not a place I want to go shopping. When I go to Reno, it's strictly for gambling. As for your choice between the El Dorado and Peppermill...El Dorado allows you to enjoy and explore 3 casinos (El Dorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus) without ever having to go outside. The El Dorado is in downtown, while the Peppermill is about 2 miles away from downtown and is close to an older mall that has a newer movie theater right next to it. I've never stayed at the El Dorado, but I have stayed at Silver Legacy 5 to 6 times. I have also stayed at the Peppermill numerous times. I used to prefer Silver Legacy due to it being a newer hotel, but my last few stays have not been great....loud neighbors and rooms that seemed to be falling apart at the seams. I'd have to say the Peppermill is my current favorite, but again you can't compare any of these hotels to those you find in Vegas. I'd say that a 4 star in Reno is equivalent to a 3 star in Vegas.

As for the proximaty of Lake Tahoe to Reno, it is about 40 to 50 miles away. It takes about 45 minutes to drive from Reno to North Lake Tahoe, and closer to an hour to drive from Reno to South Lake Tahoe (you take completely different routes to get to each). If you're considering going to Reno so that you could check out Lake Tahoe, I would recommend that you stay at one of the casino/resorts in South Lake Tahoe such as Harrah's or Harvey's. Again, you cannot compare these hotels to the ones in Vegas, but you'll have a much better view when you look out your window than you would if you were staying in one of the hotels in Reno.

Also, if you come at the end of March, it will still be rather cool (50's to 60's for daytime highs in Reno, and 40's to 50's for daytime highs in Lake Tahoe), and there will be a decent chance that you'll see snow (either on the ground or falling) while in Tahoe.

KRSLONG left you some great information. I just have a few things to add. As stated, the Peppermill is off by itself away from the "downtown" area. If you don't have a car or you're only in town to stay in your room and gamble it should be fine. Otherwise, I'd stay at one of the downtown hotels. You would have much more available within walking distance including the other casinos and all the restaurants and entertainment they have to offer (no matter how tempting the prices are do NOT eat at the Circus Circus),the truckee river, movie theater, art museum, auto museum, parks, and cute shops. However you might want to consider that a major downside of staying downtown is that the train tracks run right through it and you'll probably hear trains at night from any of the rooms. Reno weather is very unpredictable. Pack for any weather and dress in layers. Tahoe is usually always 10 degrees cooler than Reno. March can be one of our nastiest months- cold, windy and gray. Hope this helps and enjoy your trip!

Thank you for your help. Regarding the weather, we are looking at the last week. Do you think the weather might be evening out by then. I don't mind cold, but would like some sunshine. Maybe April would be a better choice?

Your chances for better weather are certainly higher in April, but there is still the possibility that you might experience a cold / rainy spell during your visit. The weather starts to stabilize towards the end of April. Tahoe can get snow in June, but it's rare and short-lived.
