down town las vegas

I am planning a trip to las vegas in late may. Have been there several times but never made it down town!!!! Now that i feel as though I can break myself away from the strip I would like to explore this area. How far is it from the strip? what are some good casinos?? Am i missing any thing by not going?? Thanks-appreciate any info-OAKEY

downtown is awesome, especially the fremont street experience. you have to see that at night. golden gate casino has .99 shrimp cocktail. fitzgeralds, four queens, were my two favorite casinos. you should set aside atleast one day/night to spend downtown. rooms are lot cheaper.goldspike is dirty. el cortez is alright, casino is very friendly.i used to stay on the strip, but now i stay at the el cortez.there's a book you can order, american casino guide,by steve bourie; it has coupons for free play ,2for1 meals, room rates for different hotel/casinos. the book also covers every state that has any casinos. it's nice to order. it'll help you a lot. hope this helps. i'll be out there in june.

For the first time I am splitting my stay in October and speding two nights downtown. We have found it friendlier. Slots looser. Main street station buffet is decent good deal. Labayou fun for drinks. El cortez is cheap and clean. I am staying at Plaza and crossing fingers as I decided I wanted view of freemont experience. Golden Nugget is fun casino. Definately check out downtown. If going just one night take cab 20.00 and tell them to go up strip not freeway. Bus is great value but slow.
