How strict are bars etc with checking ID?

My cousin, aged 18, is travelling to Vegas with her family in the coming weeks. I know legal age in the US is 21 but not sure if they do (I'm not going to tell them, they can do their own research).

Anywho, I know she's used fake ID's to get into bars and clubs here in Australia. How strict are casino, bars and clubs etc at checking ID's?

Just curious, that's all.

Heck, my sister is in her 50's and she was asked for ID when ordering drinks in Hawaii (I mean, come on, really?!?!).

From my experience, very strict, we got ID'd at Cesears Palace for two bottles of water! When we said we didn't want alcohol, just water, his response was 'you gotta be 21 to be in here don't you?'.

She is probably going to try and use a fake ID and when she gets caught her vacation will end there.

Honestly...she won't be arrested for the fake ID. They're not even supposed to take it from her, because that's her property! Besides...the bouncers and bartenders don't want to deal with the police....they have other jobs to worry about.

What will happen is that the rest of the family or friends will want to continuing doing what they're doing, and the 18 year old will be left outside...probably to try to get into another bar.

My wife is 37(im several years older) and she gets carded everywhere. We visit Las Vegas 5-6 times a year and this has been a constant.

I have first hand knowledge the fake ID trick in Vegas will not work. My cousin thought her fake ID will work and it didn't. Several friends and family tried to convince her silly self not to go. She was hard-headed and went with her friends anyway. She ended up spending her evenings snap chatting my daughter b/c the friends were at clubs and she was alone in the hotel.

Many ppl on this board are quite moral. Apparently. To be honest, I doubt if they really go out of their way to detect a fake ID. If the ID's bday adds up to 21 I don't think they think any more past that. I know a 19 yr old that uses her fake ID all over the country (she travels alot) and is never caught because I doubt they care.

On the other hand, there is always a chance you'll find someone that is as moral as the fine ppl on this board who may take the extra step to legitimize the ID. In that case, your friend's vacation may very well end there. So, there's a chance. Take her at your own risk.

"They can and most likely will take the fake ID, using it is against the law. "

While using it is against the law, it's also against the law to simply take someone's property. The only way someone can take someone's fake ID is if they're going to detain the person, call the police, and then hand over the ID to the cops. The bar or club is not going to want their staff babysitting someone with a fake ID waiting for the cops to show up, which is not going to be a priority call. How many times have you seen someone being detained by a bar or club for a fake ID? My guess is never...

It also puts the bar or club in a liability issue: If they take someone's *real* ID, what right do they have to do that? That will get them in a lot more legal trouble.

Bars and clubs are permitted to refuse service to anyone, as long as they aren't discriminating. We talk about this endlessly on these forums, especially for foreign visitors. We say, quite often, that bouncers won't accept international drivers licenses because they can't verify them. Or they won't accept someone's expired license when they turn 21 even if they have a receipt showing their new license is being processed. Again - there's nothing wrong with that.

So, present a fake id...if it's rejected, it will be handed back to the person. They are then asked to leave. Case closed. Don't believe me? Start talking to your neighborhood bars...they know the law and the court rulings behind these standards.

Bouncers are absolutely allowed to confiscate fake IDs.
