Blackjack tips

In Vegas last year, I played a fair amount of Blackjack (as a relative newcomer).

What basic tips would you give in regards to when to 'Split' cards, and when to 'Double-down'?

What card can you split and double on?

Thanks.

Basic tips on splitting:

NEVER split 10s

ALWAYS split 8s and Aces

NEVER split 4s (unless it is against a dealer 5 and you are allowed to double after splitting)

Most other pairs you want to split against a dealer 3 thru 6.

Basic tips on doubling:

ALWAYS double on 11

Double on 9 and 10 against a dealer 2 thru 6

Double on soft hands of 13 thru 17 against a dealer 3, 5, or 6

There are some minor differences and/or additions based on the table rules, but this should at least get you started. Check the wizardofodds site for full details on all table rules and strategies.

Get a basic strategy card available in most casino gift/sundries shop - or make your own from the website suggested by Rhino. Study it some and then take it with you to the table - yes that is allowed. There can be some slight variances based on several factors but the card will get you very close to playing with a very low house advantage.

In addition to the above - always look to play a table that pays 3:2 for Blackjack.

And have fun!

Follow Basic Strategy. Follow Basic Strategy. Follow Basic Strategy.

Every time I hear some nitwit say "I follow basic strategy, BUT I don't.... (double eleven on a ten, split 8's against whatever, etc...), I roll my eyes.

I feel really silly about this, but how do I know what the pay tables are? Are they posted at each table?

It will either say on a sign on the table, or across the felt itself, "Blackjack Pays 6:5". Otherwise, it pays 3:2.

I assume you mean whether they pay 3:2 or 6:5 on blackjack. So, it will either be printed on the felt, or it will be on the min / max bet display next to the dealer. If not, ask the dealer. You can pretty safely assume in most casinos these days, you will not likely find a $5 minimum table that pays 3:2 for blackjack.

Not many people from UK are likely to "stumble" into the El Cortez.
