This thread was originally started by Supershe and updated every six months or so. She has been ill and unable to join us here on TA and FB. So in her honor, here is an updated version of the Downtown Thread.
Here is our NEW Downtown Forum Thread, where we can all meet up, make plans for trips, discuss those plans, and ask for information from other Downtowners, who know a lot about what goes on DT. Many changes are happening Downtown, most of them are changing the face of Downtown!
Lots of Renovations are going on DT. The Plaza is finished, but the Golden Gate is working on a new tower and renovations throughout the entire building, including suites .
The Fitz is now “The D”, the casino is being updated with new carpeting and a New “Long Bar”. Rooms are next, so by late summer some should be ready.
Binion’s has built a new bar right on Fremont- Whiskey Lickers and GN is opening Bar 46 –which will open right onto Fremont. Plus they opened one right by the pool off the lobby. Rumor has it that Binion’s is currently renovating their closed rooms for a date in the near future to reopen decorated in Red and Silver, along with a new resturant where the café was called Velvet Marguerita.
The Mob Museum has opened up with a lot of fanfare 300 Stewart Ave, 2-3 blocks from the FSE. While you are over in that direction, be sure to stop at the Mob Bar (formerly the Side Car) and Hogs and Heffers and have dinner at the Triple George .
Most people know that the Firefly Lounge formerly in the Dome is now Oscar’s. A new steak house owned and operated by the former Mayor, Oscar Goodman. Reports have stated that the food is above average and with wonderful views of the FSE.
Also want to mention the $10 Large One Topping Pizza with a 60 oz. pitcher of beer offered at Benny's Bullpen at Binions...open daily from 5 Pm~1 am Monday thru Friday, and open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am-1 am. They do have a nice bar menu of other food available as well.
While you are at Binions’ don’t forget to stop back by the Player’s club to have your free picture taken—It’s a FREE 5x7" photo in folder, w $1,000,000! 10am-10 pm
Chart House Bar/Gold Rush Tower- 4-6 PM Monday ~ Friday! Drinks $3-6, and Entree Sized Appetizers for $5-7. Great Vibe with Aquarium at Rush Tower as your back bar! Fish Tacos with Fries, Calamari & More, and Prime Rib, and Foccachi sliders, and Hummus are some of their food offerings... and they are tasty!
Grotto at the Golden Nugget also has a nightly Happy Hour but I'm not certain of the times for this.
El Cortez Happy Hour All Bars. 2-4-1 Martinis 5-7 pm daily. They renovated the old Piano Bar next to Flame Restaurant, and opened The Parlour in that location. We still miss the Piano Bar.
There are lots of new bars down on East Fremont. The majority are right close to El Cortez and it’s safe to travel to these. Take a walk down and explore.
Don’t forget about the "Zipline". It’s $15 before 6pm and $20 after. There’s usually a considerable wait, but according to those who have done it, well worth it, especially as the light show is going. Awesome. There is a weight restriction of 250lbs.
There is always a lively scene Downtown in the evenings, with live bands appearing, Fremont Street packed with people dancing in the street & enjoying the vibe! The Laser Light shows are great, and wonderful to see. These appear every hour on the hour, from either 7 or 8 pm, depending upon what time "dark" arrives, up till midnight or 1 am every night.
This summer there will be many concerts by named "Big Hair Bands"
And there are the spray paint artists, Carl, the "safe sax" man, and all the celebrity lookalikes, for photo taking. Never a dull moment Downtown.... You just have to plan a visit here, no matter where you are staying. Some of us consider this "our special place"....
Don’t forget your coupons from the FSE www.vegasexperience.com. Enter you email address and then the password is realvegas. Lots of good coupons for buffets, meals and other things DT. If you use the buffet or meal coupons, you must go to the players club to activate the coupons prior to using them.
Can't wait till I get back here! If you have questions, this is the Downtown forum, so ask away. We have many experts gathered here!
Thank you Sheila, for the basis of this post and on behalf all of us here on Trip Advisor, we miss you and get well soon, so that we can party together DT.Edited: 5:45 pm, April 14, 2012
