Drive to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas

Hi

We are going to Las Vegas April 2011 with our 2 children aged 7 & 6yrs. We have been looking at the helicopter trips to the Grand Canyon but they are very expensive. We are going for 9 days and would like to see the Grand Canyon.

Whats the drive like? Car hire? Would it be better to stay over night?

Where?

Any help would be much appreciated. Were travelling from Ireland to Vegas and never been before.

Many Thanks

Hi

The best way to go is to rent a car and stay over night. It is about a 5 hour drive to the entrance. You can stay right inside the canyon (if not already fully booked) or as we have done in the past stay at Williams, about an hours drive to the canyon. You will find many chain motels/hotels there which will allow your children to stay for free, most will include breakfast in the room price.

It's about a 5 hour drive, much of it very boring. Then 5 hours back.

If you want to go, rent a car and stay overnight.

Hi,

Know that if you take a helicopter trip from Vegas you will be going to the West Rim not the South Rim where you really want to go!! The South Rim is in the National Park System and what is considered the "real" Grand Canyon!

Renting/hiring a vehicle is the best way to see the Grand Canyon South Rim. The drive is very easy and the road is well marked! Will take you about 5 hours to drive. Staying overnight is must IMO! Check for lodging by either calling direct (which would be best at this late date) 303-297-2757 or by checking the website www.grandcanyonlodges.com.

Next best place to stay would be in the town of Tusayan which is right outside the entrance gates to the park.

Enjoy

SJG

Hi

Should have added, if you do drive you can also see the Hoover Dam and visit Seligman (on old Route 66). Good place to stop and get an ice cream!

Read the Top Questions on the right hand side of this page to learn and understand your options. Your destination needs to be the grand canyon Nat'l Park at the South Rim. Helicopters from LV don't go there.

Best option is to drive and stay overnight INSIDE the park.

Book your room ASAP. The hotels at the GCNP book as much as a year in advance.

I will go a step further and suggest staying 2 nights at the South Rim. The place is quite vast, and even then you will not be able to visit every viewpoint.

We hired a car with carhire3000.com and went to Lake Mead,Hoover Dam & South Rim Grand Canyon. The drive was an easy one once out of Vegas it took us nearly 5 hours but we took the TV's for this kids so they were happy!

It really is an amazing place although it was cold 50f! We stayed and watched the sunset totally awesome. Would reccommend anyone to do this. We stayed one night at Canyon plaza which was fine. We had a suite.

We drove to the viewing tower at GC WOW!!! a must do!
