Anyone seen the newly renovated Tropicana Hotel?

We will be in Vegas in May and read about the renovations to the Tropicana.

Has anyone been and how is it? I hear they are working on a new pool right now. Were you aware of construction?

Also, how are the restaurants in the hotel?

Please help me with this decision.

Thanks, CC

I was just there and the casino was half open with construction happening behind boards. I would avoid staying there for now, if it were me.

Thanks for that information.

Now we have to decide on another hotel though.

Any good suggestions? We are both seniors and cleanliness and comfort are key. We don't gamble so casinos are not an issue.

We are comfortable with anything up to a little over $100.

MGM Signature might be a good choice at the top of your price range. It would be knocked down a bit if you have mobility issues.

Planet Hollywood, Paris, GO rooms at Flamingo, even the Wide Screen Rooms at Excalibur will all be comfortable, modern, and clean. Honestly, almost any of the strip hotels will be fine - browse the websites and find one that appeals to you in terms of amenities, location, dining, and so forth.

Then go have fun!

How long is your stay? Does your stay include a full weekend? If it's on weekdays $100 can get you into nicer hotels when using the promo codes. On a weekend it can get more expensive but if the stay is long the average nightly rate won't be too bad. If it's just the weekend then you may be looking at mid tier hotels only.

You mentioned casinos are not important to you. How about pools? Do you spend a lot of time by the pool, or is it not important? If the pool is important you might want to look at MGM or Mirage. Again this depends on if your stay includes weekends (and if it includes Memorial Day weekend or not..).

They've got some photos on vegaschatter.com of the remodelling at Tropicana - actually it looks pretty good (and VegasChatter were positive about the changes being made).

Not somewhere I'd stay (as I prefer a mid-strip location), but for a $60 - $70 per night hotel it seems ok.

Hi, Thanks for your help.

We would be there from Sunday May 9 to the 12th.

What is a "promo code" and how do I get one?

I guess a nice pool would be a bonus.

I just get really confused with all the choices and the conflicting reviews.

Appreciate it, CC

Thanks for your help.

You may be right about being more mid-strip.

I am investigating the suggestions from the kind replies I received.

I do love some direction as the choices are just too confusing.

Thanks CC

If you sign up to MGM Mirage and Harrah's hotel websites, you'll be offered discount (promo) codes. Also go to www.smartervegas.com for discounted hotel rates.

Have a look at Monte Carlo which might suit you. It's not a party hotel and has good dining options and the most comfortable beds I've ever known. It's a stylish but relaxing hotel with a decent spa.

Avoid Planet Hollywood which you might find too noisy. It's now a party hotel, unlike its predecessor, The Aladdin.

www.vegastodayandtomorrow.com has been tracking progress there. The restaurants are all pretty new but since the Trop had gotten such a bad rep, it will be a good while before enough people are going to be willing to give them a shot to get a fair picture.

For alternatives, look at Bally's (North Tower), Bills, Harrah's, Monte Carlo and possibly Mirage. Watch out for resort fees on the last two. They are usually in your budget for a weeknight but some may be too expensive on weekends.

I'll be checking in to one of the brand new Paradise Tower rooms on 4/28, my first time staying there. Unfortunately the new pool will not be ready for my trip, I believe it is planned to be finished in early May. Short trip for me so I wasn't planning on much pool time anyway.

't"Introducing our BRAND NEW Paradise Tower Rooms!

*Brand New Serta Mattress

*42 Inch HD Flat Screen TV

*iHOME Clock Radio with MP3, iPOD, and iPHONE docking station

*Bathroom with Granite Counter Top

*Independent Vanity Mirror with 3X Magnification

*...and so much more"

A couple of the girls from the hotel staff have been posting alot of day to day pics and updates on the Tropicana's Facebook page if you want to check it out.
