Need suggestions - vacation in July 2010 - first time

Hi,

We are 2 adults - 2 kids (13) going to Las Vegas for 3 - 4 days. Any suggestions where to stay (people suggest on the strip more fun) - what to do - and we want to rent a car to go to Grand Canyon. We plan to use hotwire for hotels and we would like to see Cirque du Soleil show. Is there hotels where we can get rebate?

Thanks for any tips... I really appreciate

July (except for the 4th) is a slow time in Las Vegas because of the extreme heat - expect it to be well over 100 F during the day, so with kids, a hotel with a nice pool may be a good idea. MGM Grand (and the adjacent Signature towers which are a good choice for families) and Mandalay Bay are probably the best on the strip and are somewhat family friendly. Mid strip, the Flamingo is a bit tired, but has a pleasant pool and a very convenient location.

For Cirque shows, check out the CdS website to get an idea of which are going to be best for you and you family. Nearly everyone likes the Beatles themed Love and it would be a great choice for kids. Avoid the awful Believe and the adult themed Zumanity. CdS shows are often available at the Tix4Tonight discount shops (www.tix4tonight.com) - you should be able to get weeknight tickets for a significant discount with no problem. There are sometimes room/show packages but they tend to be couples oriented.

I am sure some will disagree, but Vegas is not as kid friendly as they want you to believe. If you plan on gambling a lot you will need to find something for the kids to do. They are not allowed in the casinos except for just walking through. We made a trip several years ago with our 14 and 15 year old kids. It was too hot (June) to go to the pools or do anything that required being outside for more than ten minutes. They got real tired of walking around after about 1 day. I suggest staying at Mandalay Bay or MGM. They have the nicest pools for kids. MGM has a monorail station and is the southern end of the monorail system. This is a nice way to get around on the strip if you don't want to drive everywhere.

I went last summer with my son who is now over 21 and had a much better time. We stayed at Harrah's which is in the middle of the strip. He and his friend had a great time. They were able to walk out of Harrah's and be right in the middle of the strip. Easy walk to Caesars, Bellagio fountains, Mirage or they could take the monorail anywhere on the strip.

Mike says, "We made a trip several years ago with our 14 and 15 year old kids. It was too hot (June) to go to the pools or do anything that required being outside for more than ten minutes." Too hot for pools?

Nathalie, just be advised that the strip is really for people over 21 to enjoy. Your kids won't be able to hang out in the casino, bar, or really anywhere but the room and restaurants. I think the shock value for your kids would wear off pretty quickly.

If you ever saw the movie Vegas Vacation, the teenagers, Rusty and Audrey were really having a boring time, until,,,Rusty obtained an Nick Papageorgio's id card stating that he was over 21,,and Audrey met up with cousin Vicki and started partying....So, that being said,,,I agree that first timers should definitely stay on the strip, but maybe not this time.

Since you are renting a car, The Orleans, South Point, or even Mandalay Bay would be better for you.

I would suggest the MGM on the strip, you dont want to be off strip. LV in July is an excellent time to go, you will find this a good time especially with children. The MGM is an ideal hotel because of their beautiful pool grounds and great prices. LV can be a wonderful places for children as long as you realize its their vacation also, there are many things both on and off the strip to see and do. I probably would Not try to do the Grand C with only 3 or 4 days of vacation, the real Grand C as I call it is a 6 hour drive one way and can take all day coming and going. I do not recommend it.

I would also look for deals and book only with the Hotel directly. The only drawback is having 4 in a room, it will be tight.

Bonjour, Nathalie :)

As for the Hotwire idea for booking the hotel, it's much of a gamble. If the hotel you end up getting on it is not a good quality, it could ruin your first impression of Vegas, and we don't want that to happen to anyone. If you're still thinking of using the service, do look at www.betterbidding.com to find a list of likely Vegas hotels being used on HW right now.

For non Hotwire queries, look to www.smartervegas.com for hotel room rate promotions from several Vegas hotels, as well as follow some hotels on Twitter or Facebook if you have accounts with either social media sites. MGM has weekly Twitter room deals that are pretty good, and that hotel is a good hotel for families and Vegas newbies alike.

As for Grand Canyon, I agree with Dice..your 3-4 day trip is too short to give Grand Canyon National Park a good look. The place is worthy of an overnight stay at least to appreciate it, and a one day trip, with the 10 hours round trip drive from Vegas to account for, won't be a good way to see the natural majesty. A good alternative would be Hoover Dam and Valley of Fire, both doable in one day and both not so far from Las Vegas as GCNP is.

As you really want to see the canyon why don't you split your trip and spend the night at the canyon (south rim not west) and less time in Vegas? 2 kids should be fine with 2 days in Vegas to see what they can (any longer and theyll hate you for not being able to do much coz of their age plus 13 is that weird age where some stuff is babyish while other stuff is still slightly too old for them and it's hard to get the balance right).

The temperature is also much cooler at the canyon if you are worried about the heat.

Nathalie,

On the contrary, I need the practice or I will forget what little I still know.

Tres bien, Monsieur Stratton. I retained enough French to understand what you said.

I agree with ebabz that splitting the trip between the Grand Canyon and the Strip would be a good idea. I also agree that MGM would be ideal. It's close to relatively kid-friendly Excailbur casino as well as Gameworks and Showcase Mall.
