How strict is Southwest's Carry on luggage

I am travelling with a hold-all wheel bag from vegas to La and the height is approx 2" bigger in height than southwest allow.I can squash it down as its a soft holdall, I have never flown without baggage being checked in, how well do they enforce this carry on luggage.

Thanks kindly in advance.

If you make it through security with it, alot will depend on if there is room in the overhead (how early you board typically will determine if there is room), that is assuming it fits in the overhead. If you get through security there is still a chance you will have to check your bag at the gate.

All airlines - including Southwest - sometimes strictly enforce carry-on rules. That said, since Southwest doesn't charge for checked bags, they tend to be more leinient and are less likely to give you trouble. Good chance it will get on, but no guarantees.

I guess you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky? Well, do you?

Why don't you just check the bag? You do realize that Southwest does not charge for the first 2 checked bags?

Most of the bags I see in the waiting area are too big to fit in the size constraints. 2" will be fine, especially as it can be squashed. Also as mentioned make sure you get an earlier boarding number by checking in online exactly 24hrs beforehand. This will help your cause in getting a space in the overhead if it is busy.

Lastly, why not check your bag? Because you can save yourself a half hour sometimes...

Thanks for all your replys, I didnt want the hassle of checking it as im only staying two nights and wanted the joy of just walking on out through the crowds as I have never had the joy of doing that before,Im usually lugging two huge case in tow!

All the other sizes are within the limits except the height but luggage can be squashed to fit in overhead, I was just wondering do they measure it at all.The uk airlines are so strict and charge a fortune for excess luggage.I guess with going from vegas and then back to vegas, Yes I will feel pretty lucky. It is sin city after all.

I can say that I have never seen any one measure the luggage. But I have heard stories of people showing up with 2 carry ons or really large carry ons and having to check their bags at the gate. I think it is less of an issue in North America, but perhaps other people might have experienced a more strict policy.

You can also have the check-in agent size up your luggage when you grab your boarding pass prior to security.

I always fly Southwest to Vegas and have seen people lug in all kinds of bags that are obviously larger than the allowable limit. No one ever says anything to them. People are fortunate that everyone isn't carrying on since that leaves room for the larger sizes of the bags that some do carry on.

Two inches? I wouldn't think you would have a second look from anyone.
