Car hire - dilema, 1 day vs 7

Hi All

I am in Vegas in June for a week. Low roller I would say but coming really as its my 10year wedding anniversay and a good time with the missus. Both plan to have a few drinks a long the way.

Anyway - I have already booked a car for s single day durring our trip through dollar as we are staying at the MGM grand. Went for a cabriolet as never driven one before.

BUT today I was reading the Alamo thread with the special offer. A economy car for $123 a week. Well, this has me in a quandry.

So, question is, should I get that deal for a week. My concern is that it will likely only be driven 2 and from the airport, 1 maybe 2 days when we go shopping. Other times I plan to use the deuce or monorial so I can have a few beers while I play slots/blackjack.

Is my thinking sound then, that maybe I should go with what I want, forgo the flexbility of car for a week and stick with the deuce, monorial?

I just got back and had a car hire for the week. Did not regret it. Although as you said it sat much of the time. We did take a trip to the Hoover Dam and did the tour. Drove over to Ellis island for the Steak Dinner special $6.95. Hit the grocery. Drove to other casinos and parked in the self park. It was nice to just get out and drive in a circle. Plus the drive down Las Vegas Blvd is a nice sight seeing drive in the morning. Lots of Picture ops.

If you're planning to do a fair amount of drinking then yes, sticking with your one-day plan is probably best. Perhaps you could stock up on snacks while you're out - Vons at 1131 E. Flamingo Rd is the closest market coming out of the airport - which would save you a few bucks.

Taking the Deuce, monorail or even splurging for the occasional cab is worth it compared to being pulled over by a Las Vegas cop for being under the influence.

Look at the overall cost you're paying for a day - including the cab fare to and/or from the car rental place and to/from the airport when you arrive & depart (figure about $15 - $20 each way each time) , vs. what'll cost to get the car for the week.

If it's nearly equal, or even cheaper to rent the car for the week, just rent the car. Don't feel obligated to drive it - leave it parked all week, except for those one or two days you do need to take it out for a drive somewhere. Still take a cab to the various clubs or restaurants - it's still not costing you any extra anyway.

Scott that $123 price will not include the insurance we need as overseas drivers in the US. For car hire in the US its best to book with UK sites as they include all the neccessary insurances in the total price quoted. Have a look at:

www.netflights.com

www.dollar.co.uk

If it is $123 a week WITH insurance- then it is worth it to keep it for a week. Just getting back and forth to and from the airport and 2 days shopping would make it worth it IMHO. You don't want to carry a lot of packages on a bus- especially a slow and crowded Deuce. The monorail is a waste unless you are going from Bally's/MGM to the Sahara, convention center or the Hilton. The stations are set way back and it is a hike to get to them. Cab fares can add up.

A car is very convenient- if you are not drinking and if that price includes insurance. If not- no, it isn't worth it. I always rent a car but my cc and own car insurance policy covers my insurance.

Please, please, please check that insurance information. It is VERY important.

Thanks all for you advice.

I have chosen to stick with my existing booking via dollar.co.uk for a cabriolet, picking up at MGM. As I booked it in the UK, it should be covered for all my. insurance needed

I think if I got the car for a week, I would feel guilty not using it, plus then I could not have a drink or 2 as would be compelled to use it. Plus, even though the Alamo deal said it included insurance, I am sure being from the UK, they would add somethinge extra.

Oh - and will get the wife some walking shoes.

Make sure they have good ventilation. I got some very nice walking shoes, but they got hot. They are on the sidewalk and the bottoms get very hot.
