Car rental: Collision Damage Waiver & Extended Protection

Hi Everybody,

I will be in Vegas in April; I want to rent a car even the rates are quite high, but this is not the only problem, the cars are not insured and if I want to add insurance I have to bay more than the renting rate !!!

by the way my CC does not cover it

My question what is the different between Collision Damage Waiver and Extended Protection ?

Note: This is the cost of insurance

Collision Damage Waiver Full ($19.99/Day)

Extended Protection ($12.95/Day)

check with current insurance company, mine (Geico) says not to buy any additional insurance because what I have with my car at home carries over to any rental I get. Now, if you carry the min. at home you might want to purchase additional.

According to my agent, my insurance covers any damages to the rental car for a wreck however what it does not cover is the loss of income of renting the car by the rental car co while the car is in a shop getting repaired.

So verify what that extra coverage if for.

Your car insurance should cover the damage with the same coverage that you carry on your own car. If you only have liability you will want the extra coverage. (Collision damage)

The time that the car is being fixed is called loss of use. You will have to pay retal rates at the highest cost of rental as long as the car is out of service. SOME credit cards cover this. Check with your credit cards. You may also need that coverage. I don't know if that is what they mean "extended protection" You will need to talk to the car enral place.

If your credit card covers any of that you have to use THAT card for the rental.

Regardless of what you read here, make sure you call you insurance company. They'll tell you what your covered for.

It's extremely unlikely that a visitor from overseas (looking at their profile I'm guessing the OP is from Dammam, Saudi Arabia) will be covered by their own insurance whilst driving in the US.

Assuming this to be the case then CDW is essential. Extended Protection less so. You'd take out EP on top of CDW.

Overseas visitors will find the best rental deals by booking and paying for rental (including CDW) before leaving home. The-Mirage, you should check out Europe based websites where this will most likely be the case rather than US versions.

Unlimited mileage

Loss Damage Waiver

State and local taxes

Supplemental Liability Insurance

Airport Concession Recovery Fees and Airport Access Fees

Customer facility charges

Sales tax

I think i will go for it

being fron the uk myself i know CDW is a must if your not from the us, not to sure about canada though. extended protect is really not needed here as you have to have travel insurance to visit the us and it covers that. try a uk base car hire company they have the insurance and taxes included in the price.
