Downtown

We've usually stayed on the strip but this time we are thinking of staying downtown between Christmas and New Years. Need suggestions for the best place to stay other than the Golden Nugget. Want to experience Fremont Street

why would you want to stay anywhere other than the nugget? all the other places are creepy. i've read that the rooms at main street station aren't bad, though.

I am in the same situation - I always stay on the strip. But next weekend the 21st I will be staying at the Main Street....I have heard it is not that bad but you should stay in odd number room to avoid the nosie from the trains on one side of the hotel. Also, my dad always stays at the Fitzgerald and he said the rooms are clean and comfortable. I'll let you know about Main Street after next weekend!

Sipe,

What is creepy about the other places on fremont street ?. IMO they are all nice, just a little older. But clean and well kept.

Main Street Station is nice, but not on Fremont street.

How nice is the Golden Nugget?

gabby,

about 60-80 dollars a night "nicer".

IMO, if your goal is to experience fremont, you don't need to stay at the GN. Use the savings to play in the "old vegas" casinos.

BTW. I've only been in the casino at GN, but I hear the hotel is very nice.

I stayed at the Plaza and loved it! The rooms are large and very clean. They're about the equilavent of a Motel 6 or something. It's tons of fun. Great drink service (very important), loose slots (also important) and quite a few $5 minimum bet tables. We've stayed at the Flamingo, MGM and Luxor and I still enjoyed my stay at the Plaza the most. Downtown is great for the "old Vegas" feel.

GN used to be a shinning star downtown. But after many changes in ownership, neglect from current and previous owners, rooms are getting worn out and showing their age.

In general all rooms downtown are on par with say something like Holiday Inn, even Gold Spike and El Cortez have been remodeled and cannot be beat for $20 to $30.

My last stay was also at the Plaza and I echo everything that escantrell said.

I will add that if you don't feel lucky in one fremont casino, there is another and another just seconds/ minutes away, with the same low limits and atmosphere.

I've stayed at the Plaza once and the Vegas Club three times (soon to be four times at the end of May). I really like the small size of the Vegas Club, and its casino has pretty high ceilings, so it doesn't seem as smoky. The rooms in the North tower are nicer than the ones in the South tower at the Vegas Club.

Have fun staying downtown! We always do.
