Is a social security card necessary in case you win a...

My friend who is going with me on a trip to Vegas has misplaced his social security card. Would he need to replace it before he goes to Vegas or would another form of ID..of course he wil have his drivers license..be necessary? For example, would a check stub be enough to claim winings along with a drivers license? Thanks for any info! TIm

I personally do not carry my SS card on me or anything that has my SS# on it due to identify theft. On the few occasions that I have won a jackpot, all the casino needs is a picture ID and you can give them your SS#. One handpay that I won at the El Cortez last year they asked to see my card. They did have to fill out some extra paperwork as I did not have it on me and they weren't too happy about it. I guess I would rather have them fill out some extra forms than take a chance and have my wallet "misplaced" with my SS card in it.

Blackjackqueen is right; you actually shouldn't have your social security card with you because of identity thefts.

You will need picture ID to get on the plane and I had to show it at the hotel to check in.

I've never won a big jackpot, so I don't know what ID you need for that.

for foreigners, I think they take the taxes right there and then. For those that live here, I think they have the choice to pay then, or at tax time.

If you are not from the US they deduct the taxes right away. My mother won $3500 a couple of years ago in Vegas and they took the tax right away. When she returned home (Canada) she had to fill out forms to get the money back from the US government. It took several months.

It depends on how much you win whether they take taxes right off the top. Hubby won $1200 at Foxwoods once and didn't have to pay. I've heard that $1500 and up, they automatically take 20%, not sure though. Then it has to be claimed AGAIN at the end of the year as income, lol. They got you comin' and goin'.

Love the 'expert' tag, VM. Very professional looking. :-)

As everyone else has commented, Picture ID, DL is all they have to see - Then they give you a W9 to file with your taxes. I was bummed thinking I would have to pay taxes on my not so huge winnings, but my accountant says I can deduct as a loss anything up to my winnings. I did get a statement from the casino also showing how much I "lost" (okay how much I played), but never had to produce it for my tax man.
