The following National Park Service website for Yellowstone National Park has information about road closure in Yellowstone National Park. There is also a link in the menu on the left side that will give you a list of facility closures for each month starting in September. Some facilities will already be shut down by the 3rd week in September.

nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/roadclosures.htm

The only road that will be shut down while you are there will be the section from Madison to Norris. To get to Mammoth from West Yellowstone you will need to turn south at the Madison Junction and go past Old Faithful, around Lake Yellowstone and up to Canyon. You will then take the Canyon to Norris road and then turn north to go up to Mammoth. It is a very round-about way to get to Mammoth but you can't complain too much- the scenery overrides the inconvenience.

Thank you so much for the update. It sounds like we need to plan for a full day when we make the Mammouth trip...We're traveling with both my husband and my parents (in their early to mid 70s) and we're trying to map out our days to accommodate their activity level. And since we're driving the minivan, a nice drive may work out really well.

yes we are going to West Yellowstone on Sept 19th. We are flying into Jackson and driving up to West Yellowstone for 4 nights then back to Jackson for 3 nights. We too are getting very concerned about road closures due to construction. I guess we'll just really find out the impact when we get there.

Would getting a room in Gardiner one night be a good idea, rather than driving all the way back to West Yellowstone?
