Route to San Francisco

Hi

Trying to plan route from Yellowstone to San Francicso, have about six days to make the trip. Have arranged accommodation close to Yosemite for one night but would appreciate any advice on rest of route plan. We love great scenery, wildlife, wide open spaces and driving!

Thank you in advance.

Daisy.

There's basically one road across northern Nevada, so you can spend some extra time exploring eastern Idaho. Sun Valley is up in central southern Idaho at Ketchum. Twin Falls is the home of several waterfalls (Shoshone Falls for one). You could drop down to Salt Lake and the mountains there if that appeals.

It is pretty hot and arid once you get to Nevada. Do you want to go to Lake Tahoe? Mono Lake is an interesting spot that would take you to Yosemite by the back way.

Since you're going into Nevada in summertime, make sure the car you're driving has air conditioning!

Hi

Yes I think Lake Tahoe sounds like a good idea, what do you mean by the 'back way'? I will certainly check with Avis again just to make double sure we will have a.c.!

If you look on a map, traveling south from Reno on the EASTERN side of the mountains, there is a road up and over west to Yosemite.

Otherwise, you can cross Truckee Pass at Reno on the Interstate highway, and go south and then east to Yosemite.

With 6 days between Yellowstone (where in Yellowstone/GTNP area?) to Yosemite and San Francisco you can take it easy. You even could spend 2 days before Twin Falls and vist Craters of the Moon and the beautiful Sawtooth. From Twin Falls you could drive us93 to Ely. Visit Great Basin NP and take us50, the "Loneliest Road of America" to Lake Tahoe. Stay Lake Tahoe, drive us 395 to Lee Vining and visit Bodie Ghost town and Mono Lake and take Tioga Pass to Yosemite Valley.

This won't be fastest route but who cares if you have 6 days. Great idea to spend that much time!

This is what I would do:

Day 1: Via Craters of the Moon to Twin Falls

Day 2: Twin Falls and to Ely via Great Basin NP

Day 3: Ely-Lake Tahoe

Day 4: Lake Tahoe

Day 5: Lake Tahoe-Tioga Pass-Yosemite NP.

Day 6: To San Francisco.

Are you sure you only want to spend just one night in Yosemeite?
