Highway 89

What is highway 89 like from near Livingston to Great Falls? It looks like a scenic alternative to taking the interstate while traveling to the Canadian Rockies for a 3-week summer vacation.

It is indeed a lovely drive.

It is a well-maintained two-lane highway through scenic valleys and the beautiful Lewis & Clark National Forest along the Kings Hill Scenic Byway.

Consider stopping in White Sulphur Springs to loosen those atrophied muscles with a nice soak in the Spa Hot Springs. There's a large main pool at 98 degrees connected to a smaller indoor pool at 104 degrees and a new outside pool at 101 degrees. The price is $7 pp for an all-day soak, if you want it.

There's a motel there, too, with a new wing with kings or two queens on the ground floor with microwave, fridge, flat-screen TV and a poolside view. The price is $138 per room.

If you're staying the night, you can visit the Mint, Stockman's or Ringling taverns for some local flavor and then catch a pizza and movie simultaneously for dinner. Yes, the local theatre is also a national pizza franchise and the seating is configured inside the theatre so you can order a pizza at the same time you buy your movie tickets and sit at a table to enjoy your pizza drinks and desert while the movie plays. It's kind of a kick!!

The next morning, enjoy a great homemade breakfast at Dorie's on the main drag before you continue down the highway.

If that's a bit more than you'd like to do, you can stop at the Forest green Bar for an inexpensive lunch en route and then walk that lunch off when you reach the top of Kings Hill Pass with a two (or so) mile hike up a trail to the Porphyry Peak Lookout Tower.

Depending on the time of year of your visit, you might be able to talk with the lookout who will show you around the tower residence and tell you about the science of spotting forest fires.

At Armington Junction, you'll take a left onto Highway 87/89 heading for Great Falls, about 23 miles away.

You should really enjoy this drive.
