Family trip in April

My husband is originally from Saint Louis, and we will be traveling with our two children, 4 and 10. I'm looking for a hotel with enough room that we won't drive my husband nuts. I usually send him off by himself for a while during the day, so I'll be alone with the two kids. Any suggestions? My guess for visits will be the zoo, museums at Forrest Park, Laumeir Sculpture Park, Shaw Gardens (is that right? the botanical garden) and the Arch. Where should we stay?

Thanks.

I would definitely opt for a hotel that could provide you with a suite. Drury Inn and Suites(downtown), Chase Park Plaza(Central West End) and Clayton on the Park(downtown Clayton) have rooms with a suite layout. It depends on what you are looking for in a place. The Drury Inn and Suites has an indoor pool and is walking distance to The Arch and Laclede's Landing. The Central West End puts you walking distance to the Zoo, Forrest Park, City Museum, Sceince Center and there are some quaint shops and restaurants nearby. Clayton on the Park puts you in a very upscale area across from Shaw Park(this is not near the Botanical Gardens)and some very upscale dining, cafes and shopping.

Your targeted areas for visits are wonderful. However, when you are alone and strapped with the kids, have hubby leave the car because these sites span a large area of Metro St. Louis and I am not sure how accessable they will be when using public transit. April can be a tricky time. I think it is the most beautiful time of year with all the flowers and leaves blooming. However, we are prone to some storms and rapid weather changes then. A day or two before coming out, check out ksdk.com or kkmov.com. These local news sites can give you a breakdown of the weather.

What is the area like around the Sheraton City Center? We have allergies, so I like the idea that it has been remodelled recently, non-smoking really may be non-smoking. Also, it appears to be close to the library. Paying for parking won't bother me, I figure the fact that the zoo admission is free will cover the cost of parking. So will this be okay? The last time I was in that part of Saint Louis was 15 years ago, but I've been told things have changed for the better.

Thanks.

The Sheraton is 1/2 mi from the main library. Never stayed there, but it gets good reviews. I don't think there are many restaurants in the blocks immediately surrounding it. However, there are still some within walking distance. A MetroLink light rail stop is just outside the door and can take you to restaurants in either direction.

FYI, Forest Park has lots of street parking in close proximity to the zoo. That would save you the $9 parking lot fee.

Whew!! Don't ever pay to park at the zoo, especially if its now $9 a car!!!!

There is plenty of street-side parking all around the zoo area of Forest Park. You can even park up the hill near the Art museum and walk down to the Zoo without a problem.

You can't complain too much about $9 parking when admission is free.

And I wouldn't complain if there were no other options, but since there are lots of places to park for free all around the zoo, I would never pay to do so.

Gateway Arch:

(Check out the museum and maybe the movie -- although probably boring for the kids -- in addition to the actual ride to the top of the Arch.)

(Great ice cream/frozen custard! A St. Louis tradition!)

The Magic House in Kirkwood is definitely fun. Unfortunately, the website doesn't seem to show the vast amount of activities they have to offer.

Grant's Farm is another worthwile family attraction.

The Science Center is great. I love the Omnimax, too! Educational, but definitely hands-on and interactive.

The City Museum is excellent, although pretty big, and quite a bit consists of mazes and secret passageways, which you'd have to follow your four-year-old through. Very cool museum, though!
