memorial weekend in St. Louis with 8-year-old girl

Hi! My family will be making our first trip to St. Louis over Memorial Day weekend. We want to visit the zoo, the city museum or children's museum, and would like additional suggestions of places to see. We also need a recommendation for a nice place to stay, with a great pool for our little swimmer! Finally, any suggestions for kid-friendly dining with good food would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Hey Mellie~

St Louis is a fabulous place to visit with children! I am a life long resident and have 2 kids (3 and almost 6). There is lot to do for families, and much of it is free! The zoo ( http://www.stlzoo.org/ ) and the City Museum ( http://www.citymuseum.org/ )are both excellent ideas and PERFECT for your 8 year old daughter!!

A few more places to look into:

1) Grant's Farm - http://www.grantsfarm.com/

My kids LOVE this place. Great tram ride through the 281-acre ancestral farm of the Busch (as in Anheuser) family. Get close to everything from Zebras to Buffaloes. They can feed the ducks, see elephant shows, and mom and dad can sample beer. All free!!

2) Must go up in the Arch!!! http://www.gatewayarch.com/

Kids love the little elevator ride up there!

3) The Butterfly House - http://www.butterflyhouse.org/

Amazing experience. Butterflies everywhere!! They even land on you

4) Magic House - http://www.magichouse.com/

THIS IS A MUST!!! It has been nationally rated as one of the PRIMO children's museums in the country. I promise, your daughter will go crazy for this place!!!!

5) St Louis Science Center - http://www.slsc.org/

Another amazing facility. Very hands on for kids. Omni Max theater experience is like nothing else you have ever seen!! If you (or your daughter) have never a movie in an Omni Maz theater go see one! Incredible!

As for hotels... stay downtown!! Get that Arch and River view... that is "real St Louis". Adam's Mark and Downtown Marriott are very nice. Both have pools.

I personally would stay at the Hyatt Regency in Union Station: http://www.stlouisunionstation.com/main.html

A lot to do and see. Great, great for kids!! Lots of fun restaurants. Still close to the Arch. My kids ADORE going to Union Station!!!! Though pool is only outdoor/heated. It's fun, it overlooks the main lake. Depends on when you are traveling.

everything s&c stated is right on the money. Lots and Lots of free, or relatively cheap fun. My 7 y/o daughter enjoys all of these places. She also enjoyed the An. Busch Brewery tour (free). Six-flags is nearby in Eureka. We usually try and eat at the Spaghetti Factory on the Landing (go early!!!). Many of the downtown hotels have good rates over the weekends as business travel slows down. Have a great time!

kelkel01 I wil be traveling in June to St Louis with my 8year old daughter we will be going to Six Flags, you were talking about good priced hotels on the week-end, is there any specific ones you could recommend? As long as it is clean and fairly close to six flags we would be happy!thanks!!

Try to find a Drury Inn. More on the inexpensive side but always meticulously clean. There is one at 44 and 141 (believe that's Fenton). Only like 10 minutes from 6 flags. Worth the drive as some of the hotels near 6 flags are absolutely rundown and GROSS!

Personally I would probably stay at the Comfort Inn in Pacific, MO, which is about 3 or 4 miles West of Six Flags. I havent stayed there but I have been by there and it looks pretty nice. According to their website it would cost somewhere around $75 per night.

I travel about 300 days per year and I prefer to stay only in Choice Hotels (Comfort Inn, Sleep Inn, Comfort Suites, MainStay Suites, Clarion and Quality Inn). I have tried virtually every hotel chain and to me Choice Hotels give you the best value for your money. Not to mention they have the best rewards program too..!

I wouldn't stay anywhere near Fenton and especially not Pacific. Pacific is close to Six Flags, but is about 35 miles from Downtown. Fenton is about 20 miles SW of Downtown. I would personally stay closer to the city. Unless you are going to spend the whole week at Six Flags (and who in their right mind would want to do that), I would choose a more central location. I think Downtown is much better. Taking in a St. Louis Cardinals Baseball game is always a good choice for things to do, although I am unsure how interested an 8 yr. old girl would be.

Yeah, not much to see or do near Fenton or Pacific. But at least they are affordable and close to 6 Flags. I agree, if 6 Flags is not the centerpiece of your trip... it would be worth it to stay closer to the action.

Everyone, thanks so much for your advice. It sounds like you are all saying close to Six Flags is pretty much yuck. The only thing is, Six Flags is our main thing. We plan on visiting St Louis in June and just for a Saturday, spending the day at Six Flags and then spending the night. But, I really really must have a clean place. We plan on seeing and visiting the arch on Sunday though. Anymore info will be very much appreciated. We really don't mind driving a distance from Six Flags to get to a clean affordable place.
