Coming to KC for MLB All Star Game Aug 8 - 11

A couple of guys in late 30's, we will be going to baseball activities in the evenings, home run Derby, All Star game, etc... However, we are looking for some fun things to do during the day. We are not interested in the typical stuff that you can see almost anywhere... aquariums, malls, tourist traps...

Any good hikes, fishing, sight seeing we can do? Something interesting aout KC that makes it unique?

We would also like any recommendations on good restaurants (expensive is OK) and brew pubs or bars.

For hiking, KC is not the most ideal spot. You can fish at one of the many lakes in KC, just depends where you want to go and how far you're willing to drive. Also, if you want to rent a boat or not.

KC is very well known for it's culinary scene right now. Of course, we're also famous for BBQ.

Here are a few to try:

Restaurants:

Le Fou Frog

Extra Virgin

Michael Smith's

The Rieger

Westside Local

Affare

Blue Stem

Pot Pie

The Boot

Westport Cafe

Beer Kitchen

Justus Drugstore

Starker's Reserve

JJ's

Gram & Dun

Oklahoma Joe's BBQ

LC's BBQ

Fiorella's Jack Stack

Bars:

McCoy's

The Foundry

The Well

Gusto

The Union

Czar Bar

Westside Local Beer Garden

Haus

Sol Cantina

Velvet Dog

Oh, I almost forgot Manifesto. It's an awesome bar that is under the Rieger. You need to make reservations a few nights in advance.

There is also the Farmhouse, they have good local food and great cocktails. Same with Westport Cafe and The Boot.

Where are you staying? I would recommended the Power and Light District for some 30 year old fun! Bars, pubs, piano bars, angel rock, PBR bar, restaurants. It's across front the Sprint Center in downtown KC. It's about 20 minutes west of Royals stadium on I-70.

KC is known for its BBQ. You ask 20 people what their favorite BBQ restaurant is, and you'll get 20 different answers. Arthur Bryant's and Strouds were featured on man vs food on the food network. Yummy!

For unique, I would say BBQ and four musums you will not find other places.

#1 Steamboat Arabia Musum - The Arabia was a \steamboat which hit a snag in the Missouri River and sank in 1856. A group of local treasure hunters located the remains in a corn field which is a half mile from the now moved river and several families excavated the 171' boat in a single winter.

They kept all the items which were dug up and are still working on the slow process of preserving the many tons of cargo which were excavated. There is a nice video about the project and members of those families are still on hand to talk about the project.

#2 Negro Leagues Musuem & American Jazz Museum - They share the same building and the Jazz museum is my favorite, but if you are coming for the All Star Game, the baseball may stand out for you.

#3 National World War I Musum.

Oh! The All Star Game is in July.

I would suggest power and light which is full of bars and clubs and is a great place. I also might suggest The plaza it has some unique shopping and some good restaurants. The Legends is also an option it has some cool things around such as a casino, t-bones stadium, the Sporting KC Stadium, Cabelas, Nebraka Furniture Mart, and let's aof good shopping and some great food! You could go to Dave and Busters which is also located there. Hope you have a fun expirence in KC!

If any of you are interested in the Civil War history, there are many battlefields in the area. An internet search should provide some details.

There are some local wineries in the area that you might find interesting. In Weston, MO, you will also find O'Malley's Irish Pub, which will be entertaining

Being a local, I just discovered a hidden gem bbq place, that is a hole in the wall, but is AMAZING and so reasonably priced! It has been on the Dives and Diners show too.... I recommend you give this a shot if you dare! And, PBR bottles (lol, I know...) are always $1.75.

Great service, friendly and very helpful waiters.

Let me know if you have any other questions since I live in the area. Would love to assist!

What part of town are you guys staying in?

Since you're coming from Baltimore, you're probably all too familiar with the Cordish Co and their entertainment districts. The Power & Light is another Corish development and offers very little local flavor. When I travel, I want to check out the local scene, not chains.

I'd stick to Westport, Crossroads and the Plaza. Power & Light as well as the Legends will offer things you can see in Baltimore.
