My husband will be working for a week or two in Kansas City this summer. I don't have the exact dates yet. I will have three young children in tow age 4, 7, and 10. I am looking for recommendations of things to do in Kansas City and the surrounding area. I am planning on driving out to St. Louis so they can see the arch and the Mississippi River. I will be heading into Southeast Kansas (Wilson Co.- Fredonia, Neodesha) where I had family settle a long time ago. I like historical places but will also do tourist attractions. Things that interest the kids is a plus. Thank you!

The Legends area on the west side of the metro has a water park, a hotel with a water park for kids and shopping area with lots of family oriented stuff like Dave and Busters arcade.

For a more upscale, urban experience, Crown Center has hotels, restaurants, a variety of nice kid oriented experiences (aquarium, Leggo, Crayola, trains, etc), and say access to the free street car which runs down the Main Street corridor of downtown KC. A short cab ride away is The Plaza which is great for strolling on a nice weather day. The Nelson Art Museum is also near the Plaza and is a very fine and free museum.

Farther afield is Worlds Of Fun/Oceans Of Fun (combo amusement and water parks) or the zoo. Be advised, the zoo is safely nestled in a very large park. That park, Swope Park unfortunately is surrounded by some dicey neighborhoods. The zoo is safe and so is getting there if you follow the route your hotel would suggest. This is not a part of town to go exploring, especially after dark.

I hope this helps.

Deana Rose children's farm in Overland Park is spectacular and Kaleidoscope in Crown Center is a treasure.

Fritz's Railroad restaurant is great for children and OK for the food. Go to the original location in Kansas City, Kansas for the best experience. T-Rex Cafe is in a different part of KCKS. The only other T-Rex is at Disney's Main Street USA. I took a friend's children there and they think I am the best Uncle ever.

Day trips:

Leavenworth - The oldest town in the state has many great old buildings, particularly in the old downtown, The kids (and probably you) will love the carousel museum. Fort Leavenworth is very interesting. There is a free museum and driving tour. http://www.kansastravel.org/fortleavenworth.htm has info on visiting the fort.

Topeka - The state capital of Kansas, is a hour away it has many museums devoted to all kind of things, some are free. The State Capitol building and has free tours, you can even take a tour to the top of the dome.

My wife's parents came from Fredonia. This is a fun place to vist about 30 miles east of there: http://www.kansastravel.org/eriedinosaurpark.htm
