Driving Safety

I see that in general all posting travelers believe Troncones/Zihuatenjo to be a safe area. How safe is driving? Would you recommend renting a car or just getting taxi's when you want to go visit outside of Troncones?

Driving anywhere in Mexico is sometimes a problem. There is no need to rent a car as there are taxi's and local buses available.

I agree that driving can sometimes be a problem in Mexico but it is nice to have a car in Troncones. If you are staying at one end of the beach, it is nice to be able to throw stuff in the car and spend a day at the other end. The walk is about 35 minutes from one to the other....and it's quite warm. It is also nice to run up to Saladita or the Ranch to surf or watch surfers and up to Buena Vista for pozole night. The drive between Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and Troncones is about 30 minutes and a breeze. I don't recommend doing it at night though mainly due to drunk drivers and cattle in the roadway.
